India launches unmanned moon mission

This isn't going to be a follow up on the Chinese one is it? Where they fake it.

Be kinda disappointing if India makes it to the moon before Canada does...

We should be on top of this game.

We have never did our own thing, even though we should have. Canada has been a big support and contributing to all space agencies around the world. Expecially the North American one.

It would be nice to have that sense of accomplish of doing it ourselves, but you got to think where everybody else regarding space missions would be without what Canada has contributed and will contribute. That's a sense of accomplishment all together.

I mean, we helped fund and setup the Chinese Space Agency so they can get there start and chance to get to space. Was a big disapointment however to see that with all the millions we spent on it, they decided to fake there first launch.

I think NASA is hanging up it's coat for space exploring right now, so I think Canada should either do it's own thing or start supporting the Asian or Russian ones. Since we already started funding and helping the Chinese one, might as well help them and get tighten our relations more with China because of it.

Even though they send us poision products and don't care who they kill to change it.

There is no North American space agency.



No prestige in providing knick knacks for other countries spacecraft.

At best we are a "contractor" for someone else's project.



You serious? Why the fuck did we waste our money on that? We have our own space agency to invest money in hello?

Virgin Galactic recently showed off the spaceships that will take rich passengers into sub-orbit starting as early as next year. The ships will take off from Spaceport America in New Mexico. The picture above just shows the spaceship — SpaceShip Two, but White Knight Two, which is a plane, is required to get the spaceship high enough to launch itself into space (pictures after the jump). Actually there is, because it's a support project meaning they couldn't do it without you.



Do you have any idea how much ONE mission costs? Canada doesn't have that money to dish out on a space missions, which is why we spend the less money into supporting other space agencies.


Are you like, blind? NASA is hanging up it's coat for the momment, they are put on pause regarding traveling places. What else are we suppose to do? Hang around with our dicks in the wind? I would rather support a organization that is making progress than waiting for a idle one to come back while everybody else is in space making history.

Do you think if Spar hadn't built the Canadarm the USA would have been SOL for a RMS? No they would have simply contracted Lockheed Martin for instance to build them one.



Budgets are not as huge as you think. The most well funded space agency (NASA) has a budget just under twenty billion.

ESA is around five billion.

Chinese and Indian Space Agency budgets are under a billion dollars, and they are going MANNED.

How much do we spend?

A little under 300-400 million. We have the financial capability to fund a program similar to what the ESA does.

But it is easier and cheaper to ride the coat-tails of others though.



How about we launch some fucking rockets? Screw the Chinese and making deals with the devil. We won't put ourselves in the history books hitching rides aboard Chinese spacecraft. Even the bloody Cubans could do that.

Direct me to the quote where I said NASA was Canadian? or was thinking about Canada? Why would I be talking about supporting 'other' space angencies and label NASA under that directory of 'other' if I was stating NASA was Canadian?

Canada's Space Agency is called CSA/ASC.



Right, THEY would have to. Which means they would have had to shell out more money just to build a design that they had no idea at the time they needed or what it would be used for. Are you joking me? WE designed that before they even knew they required one, it was designed to better help out with the space missions.

The Canadarm is a Canadian Achievement that benefits all Space Agencies that use it.



Right, and Canada will get that money from where exactly? This isn't America saturn, this is Canada and finance is different here. We don't have billions to throw into places.



Somehow I don't see 300-400 million equaling out to a 20 billion budget, let alone purchasing everything we need to launch for one space mission.



If Canada COULD launch some fucking rockets, we would have. There is no possible way Canada could or would finance to launch it's own rockets. NASA could do it because they were financed by the wealthiest nation in the world, or atleast was anyways along with backing from Canada.

Unless Canada gets some financial backing from other countries, like we did for everybody else. I just don't see Canada doing it's own rocket launching. Expecially at this time.

Let's work this out, 300-400 million budget. Minus Astronaut training and salery. Minus tech workers, and all the workers needed to manage a mission along with everybody that CSA employs (A lot of high salery workers). Along with the additional workers they use. Than we got to buy a shuttle (not cheap), fuel and every equipment it would need for the shuttle and to manage the mission. Then we got to hire more workers to maintain the new stuff we bought, who know how to maintain it so when we launch it, it won't fall apart or explode.

Plus whatever else I forgot, which is just ONE mission. Than we got to put in the same funding for the rest of the missions that we would launch. I mean if we launch one mission, we would have to continue right?

Also take into account that because of this financial crisis and everything the world is apparently facing. The Government might want to take some funding out of some things to help support the economic crisis. Since the CSA isn't really doing much, my guess would be it. Unless the 300-400 budget is a updated one?

Consider yourself directed. The "North American Space Agency" that you alluded to doesn't exist.



SPAR built the arms on contract to NASA. SPAR built them because NASA asked for them (it was not a "pre-existing design). I believe Canada paid for them as our "contribution" to the Space Shuttle program.

So NASA got some incredibly useful expensive toys (paid for by the Canadian taxpayer) and we got to send up one mission or payload specialist every few years or so.



We can seem to spare an extra billion dollars on a crap gun registry, why not a space program?



There is a difference between "can't" and "won't".

Canada falls into the "won't" category. The money exists, we just spend it on other things. Gun Registry, funding to the arts, Foreign Aid, so on and so forth.

For one, private companies can do it more efficiently and cheaper than Governments, and probably faster too.

The only reason you are talking about Canada entering the space race is out of silly pride for the country.

Why not fund private "Canadian" companies or enter into a joint venture with a company like Virgin Galactic to go into space???

Yeah... you see the purpose of a national space program is research, exploration, and the building of national prestige... most definitely not to shuttle high paying tourists into orbit. I know the Russians have been getting into that game as of late, but that's what happens when you have no dollars.
