I guess it's the younger generation, the YouTube gerneration that is pushing for or will vote for Obama.
That is why I think they should raise the voting age to 30.

Realistically though, Powell should have kept his fucking mouth shut on this. If he is republican he should be quiet. So many republicans have respect for him, why alienate them. He destroyed whatever was left of his career.

The reason I stated an age limit, is just because you're 18 does not make you an adult, suddenly understand the economy, foregin relations and so on.
There is a reason why the drinking age in the USA is 21, and many so should the voting age be raised to 21 yrs old.
Hell most of these 18 year old twits would vote for Paris Hilton if given a chance.

It was Republicans that destroyed his career. He was the fall guy who went to the United Nations adn presented the case against Saddam Hussein for the Amercian led invasion and occupation of Iraq. The "case" tured out to be an embarrassing string of lies and incompetent intelligence--he looked like a liar or an idiot, and brought the US to its lowest international standing in the world community in modern history.

Canada's legal voting age is 18, we haven't voted in Avril Lavigne yet. 18 is fine.
I never understood how you could justify sending 18 year old "twits" to dodge bullets in Filluja, but they can't legally have a drink.
PS: Maturity and age are not perfectly correlated. Just look at the campaign trail for both parties and you'll see plenty of immature adults who will end up voting for all the wrong reasons.

I know plenty of 40 y-o's who have no understanding of economics, politics or foreign policy. They're more interested in watching the Leaf's lose or trying to guess whose going to be America's Next Top Model than Politics with Don Newman.

Someone on this forum started a thread stating that voters should have to pass an aptitude test of some kind in order to vote.
At first I didn't agree with him, but now in retrospect, it might not be such a bad idea to weed out people who have no idea why they are voting...

O.K., fair enough. What material should be covered on the test? And whose going to administer it? What should be the criteria for being allowed to write the test? How many languages should the test be administered in? How often should the test be written? Every year? Prior to every election? Upon turning 18 (or 30, 40 or whatever age we decide is the new voting age) Maybe we could set up a new bureaucracy at great expense, maybe call it "Vote Canada", and hire thousands of public servants on the taxpayers dime to oversee the exams?

Why should he "keep his fucking mouth shut"? Not everyone in America hails from the "Rush Limbaugh School of Mindless Partisanship."
Powell is an accomplished Black-American with an in depth knowledge of Washington politics. In an election where race is an integral issue to the debate, it only stands to reason that his opinion would be sought.
Sure, simple questions to see if they understand politics and who the candidates are.

Excellent idea. My wife wrote the Citizenship test last year when she got her papers. I had a look at it before hand. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that alot of born and bred, snowmobile riding, hockey fanatic Canucks would have trouble passing it. It asks some basic questions about our system of government, history etc.
So, the system you're proposing would actually favour new immigrants in Scarborough and give them a vote over 3rd and 4th generation Canadians from Bracebridge or Port Coquitlam. Is that really the kind of system you want to promote?
