    I didn't believe that standard purchase pellet guns had muzzle energy or penetration to kill people.

    Training with any weapon like this is critical and it's best done with BB-guns and pellet guns. For all the tragity this is, it's a very rare occurance and I'd hate to see them regulated like firearms.

    You're right:
    Canada Firearms Center delineates between airguns that can be bought without a license, and those for which one must have a PAL (Possession & Aquisition License).


    1. Air guns that are firearms for purposes of both the Firearms Act and the Criminal Code.

    These are air guns with both a high muzzle velocity (greater than 152.4 meters or 500 feet per second) and a high muzzle energy (greater than 5.7 joules or 4.2 foot-pounds). The “muzzle velocity” is the speed of a projectile at the instant it leaves the muzzle of a gun, normally expressed in metres per second or feet per second. The “muzzle energy” is the energy of a projectile at the instant it leaves the muzzle of a gun, expressed in joules or foot-pounds. Air guns need to meet both standards to be classified as firearms for purposes of the Firearms Act.


    I was looking up what sorts of muzzle energy these have but pellet weights are all over the please so I gave up.

    Pellet rifles, B.B. guns, paintball markers are not toys. They should be treated with the same care and respect of any firearm. I had a 22 cal pellet rifle not long ago. ( it got 'lost' during a move ). a shot from it would shatter a beer bottle at 25 feet, no problem. So I well imagine that the boy either was shot through the eye or possibly even a temple.

    Spring operated guns or CO2 guns with a new cartridge can easily penetrate the head, especially at close range.

    I hope it wasn't another kid that shot him. If it was, I guess he'll have to be sent to adult prison. :mrgreen:

    Dont think this fits as Violent Crime, if it was a real gun he should be tried as an adult.

    I've used them to kill squirrels and gophers.......and one or two noisy cats. A .22 cal CO2 powered pellet can easily go 1/3 to 1/2 the way through a decent sized phone book, or even light sheet metal(squirrel tried hiding in a duct pipe).

    Not if it wasn't in cold blood. It was probably just an accident. Shit happens, even really tragic shit.

    You do have me there, but still childeren should not be unsupervised when playing with anything that could mortaly wound someone.
