Killer whales in waters off southern Vancouver Island and Puget Sound are losing blubber and developing strange behaviour patterns because of a shortage of salmon, whale experts say.

This is not good news. When animals at the top of the food chain are starving something is definitely wrong. This is going to open up a whole new can of worms about habitat loss and the issuing of fish farm licences in sensitive areas.

This is just going to be the same old bullshit like in the artic, the fishers are going to complain and do everything in there right to keep fishing. The government will probally back them up because it makes a profit.

Hate to say it, but when it comes to animals. Our government is shit. Really shit.

The problem is.....there are no salmon...commercial fisheries on the Fraser are closed. Salmon stocks are down, there is a challenge coming about the licensing of fish farms, which they say are killing off wild salmon stock because of sea lice latching onto young salmon as the migrate to the ocean.

B.C. fish farm regulation faces constitutional challenge

It's not the fishers' fault that stocks are being depleted to the point of endangering speies, it's the government's fault for not placing sane regulations on the amount they're allowed to catch.

The same thing happened to cod. That's why we have the seal hunt, to cull the competition, because seals need a lot of cod to live. Instead of having sane, sustainable quotas, the government opted to have no quota and allow fishers to catch however much they wanted because there was such an abundance of cod they didn't think overfishing it would one day just about kill it.

ziggy....there are a couple different resident pods here and a transient pod. Later today I'll try to find more info on them, but I think one or two do feed on sea lions and seals, while one of them feed mainly on salmon.

Resident orcas eat salmon--chinook are their favourites.

I don't expect this issue to get much traction. When the economy tanks, people don't give a rat's ass fo rthe environment. Humna nature--Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

why are people constantly blaming commercial and sport fisherman for the depletion of salmon. i believe the problem starts at spawning season, in the rivers. having laws that are more strict for fisherman are not going to solve the problem, because those laws are directed to people who are not natives. its seems that natives can do whatever they like, because they always use the term "its part of our heritage". i grew up in Duncan, BC, and i have spent a lot of time on the Cowichan river. the reservation starts at the mouth of the river, and travels up to and around Duncan. during spawning season is the worst time of the year for the fish. i have seen salmon all over the road in the reserve, and i also see rock damns across the river. the lastest thing ive seen this year is a weir across the river, just upstream from the silver bridge in Duncan. so, how are salmon able to spawn in a river, when there are no laws governing natives from "stipmining" the rivers, of fish. these laws and regulations needs to be applied to ALL people. mabye then, we'll see an incline in the salmon population
