Paul Gross war epic to screen for Canadian troops in Kandahar

How well do war movies go over with troops already in a conflict?
I'd guess it's a welcome diversion if nothing else.
Good to see Canadian history being recognized too.

Well my guess is, the actual war part of the the movie won't be as thrilling to them as it will be for non-soldier Canadians. However the pure respect the soldiers get in the movie, the bravery, etc I think will be the meaning they will look forward to. Give them extra pride in being a Canadian Soldier.

They'll watch it. It's about those who came before them.

FWIW, all the action parts of those kinds of movies are crap. Fantasy can't ever hold a candle to reality in that department.

You don't know anything about the movie do you? He based it on reality as best he could, which includes uniforms, action scenes, even trees in the scenes. Every detail in the battle scenes was done based on the reality of those wars.

There is no fantasy in this movie except for the romance part of the movie, they even got Canadian Forces bringing the realism of war to the movie by bringing them there Afghanistan war Experience to them.

It may be based on a different generation of war, but war is war and doesn't matter what generation its from.

For one thing most battle scenes would not play out the same as in the movie. I know a guy that played the part of Smokey Smith in the series “For Valour” For filming purposes they need to get everyone in close to one another which would never happen in battle. He told the director this and was told if they did it the proper way, there would only be one guy in the shot at a time. Also they need them to be clearly visible with their head up so they can be seen….that would never happen either. Lots of other things like that as well.

The reviews have not been kind, which is a real pity as the CEF's contributions in WW1 need to be appreciated.
A quick way to get a good overlook is to read Berton's 'Vimy'. Nice little read and his narrative maybe simplistic and use an artistic licence, but it's so readable!

You're missing the point of my comment. No movie, no matter the attention to detail, who was working in it, or the place it was shot can ever match the sheer sensory overload of a battlefield.

The action scenes are the creation of the crew. Don't like the word fantasy? Fine. It's artificial, not real. Staged. Contrived. Pick one.

Soldiers who've seen the elephant don't get drawn into it. Doesn't matter what era the movie is cast in at all.
