The Afghan war is going to end up costing the Defence Department more than $22 billion, both in actual money spent on the mission and future payments to rebuild equipment and provide long-term care for veterans, a military conference heard Wednesday. T

Afghanistan has nothing to do with security at home. I agree that we had to go there due to our NATO commitments, but the Taliban never attacked Canada.

El Qaeda did (from bases in Afghanistan), but given that Afghanistan has played second fiddle to Iraq, I don't think our presence makes Canadians more or less safe than prior 9/11.

$22 Billion, from 2002 to 2008. That's $3.6 Billion per year for Chretien's war, assuming none of that cost is start up.

Not bad considering the Gun Registry was $2 Billion and we still have about 1200 people killed with firearms every year.

    :D

    In fact, considering:

In 2006, one-quarter of all firearms-related violent crimes in Canada occurred in the city of Toronto, as well as the highest proportion of violent crimes involving firearms – one-quarter of all firearm-related victimizations in Canada.11
    • Handguns accounted for 86% of all firearm homicides in Toronto in 2006 (a much higher proportion than equivalent national figures).

So 86% of 1200 is over a thousand people killed every year by (almost all) illegal handguns.

So far Afghanistan is sounding cheaper and safer than a Liberal Toronto. :D

Perry's study also determined the Liberal government had provided extra funding to the Defence Department to cover 85 per cent of the Afghan war costs. The Conservative government, however, is funding only 29 per cent of the cost to the Defence Department for the war, according to the study, with the remaining money coming out of DND's existing budget.
Perry said the Conservatives might be providing more funding but that is not apparent from publicly released figures. "The Liberals were much more transparent in the funding they were providing," he said.

So either the Conservatives aren't providing the funding or they are hiding it. Nice.
