Crowds gathered in a Nova Scotia community Saturday to honour a little-known military unit from the First World War: Canada's first -- and only -- all-black battalion.

I never knew about them. Why isn't the CBC telling us these stories about Canadians?

I think it is pretty embarrasing that these guys wanted to serve their country and were forced to form their own battalion to do so. It doesn't say very nice things about our military's past hiring practices.

This is in the first world war. Considering there was rampant racism up until not too long ago, it's not much of a surprise.

You are probably right, I guess I normally just associated that with the U.S., but that probably explains why this group is not well known.

Why only associate it with the U.S.? There was racism in Canada too. Hell, the U.S. had black regiments in the civil war, putting it 140 years before this.

Canadians have learned a little bit more history of the Military Engineer Branch.

    Chimo!

It is far less well known that the Canadian military openly discriminated against black's in the military well into the 20th century. I don't think this is their proudest moment.

They were a part of their time.
