Good one Stevie. How about taking away a woman's right to vote? Agree or disagree with the result, a woman's right to choose is also a unifying cause.

Why stop at a womans right to vote if we're gonna throw that into the mix.

Come to think of it, Nelly McClung was never a recipient of the Order of Canada.

Harper's point is abortion is a divise subject. Period.

Some people agree with it other people dont.

She died some 16 or so years before the Order of Canada was created. The Order of Canada is not given posthumously.

But the appointment is not for his abortion work, it's about his expanding the rights of women. He did so at great risk to his own personal safety. Although, just mentioning the name that should not be mentioned seems to change the subject to abortion.

    R=UP

I was trying to find those two dates. I kind of thought that might have been the case.

Robert Latimer did a great deal to advance the assisted mercy killing of Canadians with terminal or serious deabilitating conditions. Will he be recieving his soon?

If we allow contraversial nominations, the road gets very bumpy and opens up all sorts of awful candidates.. Like Buz Hargrove?

The PM is, as usual, full of it. Many controversial people have been awarded the Order of Canada, including Harper's good buddy Brian Mulroney.

    Congratulations, Dr. Morgentaler.

Agreed... that was a real low point when Mulroney was given it.. kind of took the shine off..

And there's a good chance that Whoreper will someday be a recipient, too, anti-Canadian track record and all.

The difference is that Latimer wasn't and isn't working towards helping all of them and its not completely clear he wasn't acting in his own interests.

Dr. Morgantaller was clearly acting in the interests of the multitudes of women who clearly wanted the rights and freedoms he went to jail to provide.

    A big difference.

Dr. Morgantaller was running a business.
    That's also a big difference.

That had coat hangers in back alleys as competition. Big difference as well.
