There's more happening in Ottawa than what you read in the paper every day. Visit Elizabeth Thompson's blog for insight into what's going on behind the scenes on Parliament Hill.

Made in Canada - Not Quite

Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion delivered a made-in-Canada environmental plan today to enthusiastic applause from dozens of Liberals MPs, senators and staffers - past and present - decked out in Green Shift t-shirts and Green Shift ball caps.

However, not everything about today's green plan launch appears to have been made in Canada.

While the tags on the t-shirts were clearly marked "Made in Canada" the tags on the green ball caps reveal they were "Made in China" - one of the most recalcitrant countries on the planet when it comes to taking climate change and greenhouse gas emissions seriously.

I saw that great bit about the Dion's hats being printed in China and just couldn't find a better place to put it than here. If they want to ignore it, that's fine by me :-)

It's a tax. Nothing in there stops greenhouse gases. It's a cash grab to fund other Liberal programs. Dion is making sure the Tories get another minority.

might as well use this thread for something.

Then And Now: GST, Carbon Tax

Sept. 23, 1989: The GST is "an attack on the weaker regions of the country, regressive, against the lower income groups, invisible, sneaky and of course ... an administrative nightmare." — Liberal Leader John Turner

Nov. 28, 1989: "Mr. Speaker, the goods and services tax is a stupid, inept and incompetent tax." — Liberal MP Paul Martin

Oct. 29, 1990: "I am opposed to the GST. I have always been opposed to it, and I will always be opposed to it. It is a tax that is both regressive and discriminatory." — Liberal Leader Jean Chretien

Nov. 19, 1990: "We will continue to oppose the GST and the tax won't be long in place when the Liberals win the next election." — Opposition Leader Herb Gray

1993 — Liberal Party Red Book: "A Liberal government will replace the GST with a system that generates equivalent revenues, is fairer to consumers and to small business, minimizes disruption to small business, and promotes federal-provincial fiscal co-operation and harmonization."

Nov. 1, 2007 — The Canadian Press: [Liberal Leader] Stephane Dion's suggestion that he might one day increase the goods-and-services tax had some of his Liberal troops shaking their heads Wednesday.

Part 2 — Then & Now: Carbon Tax

2006 — Stephane Dion's Leadership Platform: "A carbon tax is less effective than a carbon market at reducing emissions. Some of my opponents for the Liberal leadership have suggested that a carbon tax would be the most effective measure to curb climate pollution. This is simply bad policy, for the following reasons ..."

March 2, 2007 — The Globe: Carbon tax a possibility, Dion confirms after Conservative attack

March 6, 2007 — The Globe: Dion's plan won't call for carbon tax, office says

Oct. 10, 2007: "Let me give you the two bottom lines of this plan: there will be no carbon tax and the money will stay in Alberta." — Liberal Leader Stephane Dion

June 19, 2008 — Dion sets table for epic policy battle with $15.4-billion carbon tax plan

    Yes, profound as ever.

People will still need to buy gas and heat their homes. All this is doing is taxing them more for basic necessities.
Taxing them more means they will have less money to spend on other consumer items. Harper is right (about time) on this one, it’s crazy economics when oil is $135 a barrel and a recession has all but started in our biggest trading partners economy.

More taxes mean’s more pain and more job losses.

I'd have this plan if it looked at investing in alternate energy or ways of cutting carbon emissions in industries such as the oil sands.
But it doesn't. It's just another tax.
Like the 'health care premium' my family pays $375 extra a month under the Ontario Libs.
Hospitals are still crumbling and understaffed. Nothing has changed besides the ER Doctor's Lexus, except I have less money to spend

Emissions have never been free old chap. Somebody always has to pay. It’s usually the middle income earners like me.

Learn about tax neutrality. Stephane Dion will deploy Canada's auditor general to backstop his claim that a Liberal carbon tax will be revenue neutral.

yeah but he can promise whatever he wants now , mean look at other liberals as examples . dalton mcguinty promised to ontarians that he would not raise there taxes only to do the opposite and raise them significantly . so based on the liberal record there is no reason at all to believe dion when he says it will be revenue neutral .

Simply having someone claim "it's for the greater good" dosen't make a difference.
The NEP was for supposed to be for the greater good and it was a failure too.
Just as the firearms registry was a failure, so will Dion's dioxide registry.

Listen carefully Benoit, it is ONLY revenue neutral as far as the federal governments books are concerned.

It WILL NOT be revenue neutral for most Canadians.

I give you Don Drummond of TD Bank.

"It's never going to be revenue-neutral for any individual or any corporation,'' Don Drummond, the chief economist for TD Bank, told The Canadian Press.

"Everybody's going to be able to do their own calculations to some degree, and there will be winners and there will be losers. So in aggregate you may say, 'OK, the $15 billion got recycled, but it didn't in my household budget.'''

Middle class Canadians, especially ones without the option of public transit, etc. will LOSE.
