A new survey about the founding of Canada shows an enduringly sharp divide between French- and English-speaking Canadians over who deserves the most credit for the nation's existence

The truth is the following, and people need to accept it...

Without the help from the First Nations, the French would not have survived very long in Canada and wouldn't have found stuff worth trading for. They would've continued to look for quick access to China and India and valuable treasures along the way. But thanks to teh First Nations, the French were able to set up some colonies in the New World. They eventually grew into what became New France.

Now, thanks to the French who had help from the locals, there was now an existing economic base in Canada. Then the English came along, because they wanted whatever France had.

After many wars, New France for the most part became British Territory, and the British merely expanded upon the foundation that the French had laid for Canada.

The truth is that Canada as we know it today would not exist were it not for the First Nations, French and British. All three are equally responsible for creating this fine nation...

Good Grief, how could there even be a controversy over this??????!!!!
First Nations people were here long before the French or English for that matter and should it not have been for the First Nations people, the French wouldn't have lived very long....
Even the old French History books recorded this as fact - but who knows how much that may or may not have changed.
"Anada" was the first name of this country - meaning "HOME"
First Nations people were the first on this continent - we all came later and - well, over populated it... :>)

Actually, the first name of this country was "Kanata", which means home or village in the language of the First Nations people that Jacques Cartier first met when he sailed down the Saguenay if I'm not mistaken. And it was Donacona's son who pointed to the coast and said "Kanata", but the Euros interpreted that as "Canada", and the rest...is history... :)

Even then, they didn't really do that. Here's how I see it...

The First Nations are like the realtor who sells you a plot of land, and tells you all about it and how best to go about it. So the French come in, decide they like the neighbourhood, and start digging a hole for the foundation of the house. They only get so far as pouring the concrete foundation and getting some of the framing and plumbing done, but the house is far from being finished. Mr. Britain from across the street doesn't like the fact that Mr. France has a much bigger house than him and a better view of the river, so he gets into a legal battle with Mr. France and ends up winning the land deeds and finishes building the house.

In other words, in my opinion, all three groups are equally responsible for founding this great nation. No one group is singularily responsible. Anyone who argues otherwise probably has an agenda...

I have no Agenda. I just wish to end the debate for the sake of closure. Any Coin will do, except the Penny, because I don't to end up being eliminated any time soon.

You lie sandorski. I founded Canada. Opened the back door when I was two and there it was. It's MINE, all MINE!!!

But you can be on the coins, we don't want to make them all oval shaped to fit Chucky's ears in when he's King.

Hmm, how Canadian of you, a reasonable compromise! The hordes of my supporters will return home peacefully.

I also request a more youthful Me, when I still had thick hair. Or if you could, just exagerate the amount of hair I currently have.

One city isn't "the" foundation for a country especially one so large as this one. Portions of a territory were fought over for many years but the country of Canada which is close to what we know it as now was founded with Confederation.

At the end of the day, "Canada" as a nation-state was based on a largely British political model with components of the French legal system (in Quebec) included. That's it. I could care less what polls say as they're largely immaterial to historical discourse and Natives may have aided European settlers, but they're not a founding member of this nation's political foundation insomuch as they were the people that inhabited some of the land prior to Contact

I'm surprised Mustang1. I would've thought that you of all people would've recognized the contributions of the First Nations to not only helping the European Settlers getting settled in, but also for showing us how to survive, and being there for us in times of war. Without the First Nations help, how woudl the War of 1812 have progrssed? Or the Seven Years War or any other war that was fought in Canada?

While they may not have contributed much in terms of the geo-political landscape, they have certainly contributed to this fine nation.

I was going to say the Vikings but then who was here before the First nations folks?

    Kennewick Man...

Who looked a lot like Patrick Stewart??

    Go figure..

I didn't deny their contributions, i fully recognize what some did and how that impacted this nation, but in strict historical terms, this had little to do with the BNA Act, responsible government, Westminster style, the Civil Code, The Quebec Act, Common law, Constitutionalism, the Charlottetown Conference, the seigneurial system, constitution Act etc. This is about "Canada" and its influences and subsequent formation as a nation-state. Natives, while not insignificant, simply don't play a larger role in the political realities of nation formation.

While they may not have contributed much in terms of the geo-political landscape, they have certainly contributed to this fine nation.

I'm not denying their contributions, merely putting it into perspective. This isn't a condemnation or agenda insomuch as its an objective realization that when compared to the French, British and Europeon influences, Natives aren't a major contributor to the political (and that's what this is) entity known as the Dominion of Canada
