VANCOUVER -- A B.C. court says a child's right to life trumps a parent's charter right to guide their medical treatment in the case of four sextuplets taken from their Jehovah's Witness parents.

    YAY!
Neglect is neglect, no matter what God you worship!

Agreed. When the kids are old enough to make thier own decisions about important things, they can decide then if the situation arises.

    The state is all-knowing
    The state is all-powerful
    The state is never wrong

The state makes it legal to pollute and you die for the state's belief in business
The state can send your children to war to die for the state's beliefs

But you can't live what you believe

    You are not free!

Good Lord! That conclusion cannot possibly be justified from my post.

No, it's not OK to let kids die from neglect or crazy, irrational religious beliefs. It's certainly not OK to send kids to war coz the US wants to control the middle east.

What I am saying is that the STATE should stay the fuck out of our lives. If some loony believes that God will save their children then we have no business telling them otherwise or forcing their children to submit to medical care.
Who OWNS these kids? The state? They sure act like they do.
Are we free or are we property of the state?

If you believe so strongly that what these parents are doing is wrong then YOU act according to your beliefs and be prepared to suffer the consequences - should the judge disagree with you.

If the state believes so strongly then it should engage in a dialog with relgious leaders and come to some sort of an accomodation. But politicians are too cowardly to do that, aren't they.

What we do NOT need is an ominpotent state controlling our lives and, at the same time, turning us all into moral cowards whose actions are confined to coffee klatches and internet forums.

I know it would be tragic of these kids were to die but there are plenty of tragedies:

Around the world, some 26,500 children die every day.

    That is equivalent to:

    * 1 child dying every 3 seconds
    * 18 children dying every minute
    * A 2004 Asian Tsunami occurring every week
    * An Iraq-scale death toll every 15–36 days
    * Almost 10 million children dying every year
    * Some 60 million children dying between 2000 and 2006

The silent killers are poverty, hunger, easily preventable diseases and illnesses, and other related causes. In spite of the scale of this daily/ongoing catastrophe, it rarely manages to achieve, much less sustain, prime-time, headline coverage.

this issue has been challenged, debated and discussed for years .. point is when the parents are involved in a cult and make unVealisitic decisions based on the precepts of that cult then yes government should step in.. when parents for whatever reason are not capable to care for the best interests of the child then someone has to do it..

You'd think they'd want the kids to grow up healthy and help them pound on our doors at 6:30 in the morning with the rest of them!

It's my religious belief that you should die. Oops, state can't intervene.

The health and welfare of a child trumps any religious freedom people have in this country.
