Well done.
I guess they had to wait untill Chretien left politics before they apologized for the effects of his "White Paper".
In 1968, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau proclaimed Canada to be a "just society." However, after a promising round of consultations between the government of Canada and aboriginal leaders in which issues of Aboriginal and Treaty rights and the right of self-government were prominently discussed, Aboriginal people were outraged when Trudeau’s Minister of Indian Affairs, the Hon. Jean Chrétien (later Prime Minister of Canada) introduced a "White Paper" which advocated the elimination of separate legal status for native people in Canada. The white paper amounted to an assimilation program which, if implemented, would have repealed the Indian Act, transferred responsibility for Indian Affairs to the provinces and terminated the rights of Indians under the various treaties they had made with the Crown.
I was just glowing when I learned that it was Chretien who was in charge when this 5 ton load of crap hit the docks. I do hope he covered that in his book.
"Biblical_Christian" said Cool, ok. Ill take my land back. Go back on the boat you came in on.
It's not "your" land. There was no such thing as 100% land occupation when the Europeans arrived. You're more than welcome to try and prove it, but you can't, so don't bother.
Oh...and everyone came to the New World - Natives included. Why don't you go back too?
What a crock of shit!! 'Survivors' of residential schools. Not everyone was a victim of abuse, in fact the overwhelming majority were not. Some of these native 'activists' would have you believe that the indians were loaded onto cattle cars and had to wear a copper coloured star. Next thing we'll be hearing is that "school will set you free" signs were posted at the gates. What's next, are indians going to try and trademark the word suffering? This entire matter is a fiasco. All an indian needs to do is say they went to a residential school and they get a shitload of money regardless of having actually attended or suffered abuse. Those survivors that can prove abuse, while attending, deserve recompense and lots of it(just as much as any other person has been awarded who suffered abuse at school), the rest of the gravy train riders need to go running with the lemmings.

The survivors deserve compensation but as you're pointed out not every Native was a victim of course that minor detail doesn't matter to the Lefties because they believe all Natives deserve compensation as the White Man is Evil and has been abusing the poor Natives, what else is the Billions of Canadian Tax Payers money Natives receive every year for? It never ends..

This is just the lowest partisan shit I have ever seen.
Trust you to take a step forward for the country as a whole on a subject that shamed us all and use it to try and score cheap political points.
You are just scum.
You are also ignorant of the fact the actual taking of the children stopped under the Liberals as did the final residential school.
You also ignored the fact that it was the Liberals and Chretien attempting an initial apology way back before the Auzzies did and it was rebuked. The Auzzies apologized in February beating Harper to the punch as it were but they have been wrestling with the apology question sinch I was in Sydney in 1999. They dominant topic was the legal ramifications and they pointed to ........ Canada's attempt to apologize which was rebuked because it seemed to cover the country to much legally.
Harper managed to take all the past experiences and knowledge to put forth this valiant effort.
What should be a non-partisan heartfelt apology from us as a whole is being shit upon by you as you can't even see past your own anti-Liberal hatred not to sully this.
Those are the facts Derby. I'm not saying that Chretien and the Liberals purposely tortured children but this policy started with Trudeau's white paper and the guy who ran Indian affairs at the time was Chretien. You can spin it all you like but you're not going to spin shit into gold.

"purposely tortured children"??? I gotta tell you, ridenrain, lately you have taken a hard swing towards cuckoo-land. The policy started, incidentally, in the late 19th century. C'mon--yer better than that.
