"We are suffering from a lot of structural problems within our own industry," he told CTV Newsnet on Monday. "We've been blaming all these external influences for the challenges of our tourism industry and we've got to put that behind us.

I have to agree with the comments at the end of the article, Canada has priced itself right out of the market. A week in Disneyland with airfare can cost less than 4 nights in Victoria. The industry has nobody to blame but itself.

Agree with mtbr. Attractions are becoming to be really important. Museums are fine, but if its the only thing you got to offer... people wont be looking to come.
Canada needs to step it up and start building. We do have the potential.

I have to agree. I worked in the travel industry for 2 years and they always seem to blame external factors for drops in tourism, but the pricing here is crazy. Hotels, flights, everything is ridiculous.

The last time I went east, it was actually cheaper to fly from Edmonton to London than it was from Edmonton to Toronto! No wonder everyone goes overseas instead of travelling here.

So true. I just booked a flight from Ottawa to Edmonton for more than it would have cost to fly to Europe! The only saving grace is staying at a friends house and not paying outrageous hotel prices.

We fly to Canada only when the in-laws have enough air miles to fly us. Flying in the US is bad enough but once you cross the border it is too expensive, especially having to buy 4 seats now. We usually drive up in the summer and fly in the winter.

When we do go vacationing and not just visiting family, we usually take the tent-trailer or borrow the in-law's. Much cheaper to go camping than staying in a resort.

The Europeans that come to Canada, mostly come for a 3 week camper or car&BB/motel road trip in either the east or the west. Gas prices are low here, compared to gasprices in Europe.

A ticket to the other side of the country is more expensive than a ticket to Europe. 3 stops just makes no sense. I was invited to come to Quebec... From here, that would cost me over $ 1000...

hotels in Canada are a major ripoff.. esp in Toronto.. they gouge the hell out of the tourists.. now they are blaming everything on the price of gas.. and air canada is a joke.. I tried to book a flight to mexico and it was more than double another air line.. and I always say why pay for an expensive hotel just to sleep.. hopefully this will make them wake up...

My family usually drives to a US airport and flies out of there, usually way cheaper for us

Canada needs to market itself better. We probably have many interesting sights across the country that we don't even know about.

Canadians complain about the price of gas , it's all relative everything in Canada is priced 20% to high. There is lots to do and see in Canada but you can see the same stuff south of the boarder for much less. Gouge and screw it's the Canadian way.

Oh hell ya...i can fly roundtrip to Costa Rica for cheaper than taking a ferry roundtrip to go to Tofino to surf...but i still do it cuz im a glutton for punishment...Ok i just want to surf all the time and will do so even if it breaks me for a short while, but I might reconsider after my next trip.
