Arctic adventurer and writer Jerry Kobalenko is usually happy to see wildlife on his excursions, but his most recent trip to Torngat Mountains National Park on Labrador's northern tip offered more than he needed.

well they would bring some sense of security when in such remote areas where there is few other people or ways to call for help . but actually shoting a polar bear isn't a great idea .

Anywhere in Nunavut all the airports have a government poster on what to do if you encounter a polar bear, what size rifle you should have, what caliber bullets, where to aim for a quick kill.
The Canadian govt. puts out these PSA's for city slickers.
When one wanders into a small community they hold a raffle at the school to see which 14 year old kid gets to shoot it.And when the kid shoots it,they spend a week teaching the youngsters how to prep. the fur.

I posted this about 2 months ago but no one seem interested as they were actually voting on it at the time in polls all across the arctic.
    Now it's old news.

But if your really interested then google "up here" magazine's website and you will see it's still a hot topic up there. The RCMP actually breath a sigh of releif when they see someone going into polar bear country with a gun.

Game wardens don't carry guns but a security force for a non-elected and non- regulated group (translink) are allowed to pack heat? Sounds dumb to me.

Just as I wouldn't work the night shift in east van without protection, I wouldn't trust a bell to scare away almost a ton of angry bear.

"We are exploring permitting the use of firearms for safety reasons," she said. "We are examining our existing policy because of an increasing presence of polar bears, more so than in the past."

And yet the government (the swivellel servants) continue to spout the AL GORE BS.
