    Good timing:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his Conservative government's overhaul of Canada's outdated product safety laws shows it won't tolerate unsafe drugs and consumer goods.

An associate, a small Ontario manufacturer went on one of these trasde missions a while back seeking access to the Chinese market. Nothing came of it except all of a sudden cheap copies of his product arrived here.

He sought redress for his pirated copywrited, patented products. The Chinese court ruled he had no right to remuneration because he had not contributed to the manufacturing process in china. Intellectual property is an unknown concept in China.

In Canada and the US, he had no means to prevent importing of the Chinese copies. He had to go after each and every retailer one by one.

While there might be some economic advantages to opening up trade with China most of the jobs it will create will be in China. China is notorious for copying anything sent down there and producing it themselves. Other than natural resources they really aren't interested in buying anything from us that they can't produce themselves which is a pretty small market. Mind you, China is completely open to Canadian companies moving their manufacturing there and more than happy to accommodate them if they choose to do so.

Why would a company from China open a plant here when labour down there is dirt cheap and it would cost less in the end to produce it there and simply ship it here?

We have stuff China Needs. To Sell it to them, you form relationships and make contact with them. That's how it works. Trade with China is certainly lopsided, but it is still 2 way.

China needs water.. Ontario is on the Great lakes.
We get all pissy about selling water to the US but will we sell it to China?

Ya, they need our money and they are more than happy to sell us cheap knocked off goods to get it. Great idea. Ask Caterpillar how they feel about trade with China.
