VANCOUVER -- Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says he would place a price on carbon as part of his government's commitment to environmental leadership, but he steered clear of calling for a tax, at least for now.
no price, no tax, this is just politaical bs there is no need to tax to recuse co2 people or politians who think a tax is needed are looking to get more money and not to reduce co2
I have a limitless supply of free wooden pallets. I ussually take a load in my pickup about twice a week for firewood.
considering that this wood destined for the landfill. And, I'm avoiding cutting down trees for firewood. Shouldn't I get some sort of tax credit for my actions?
Liberals like to tax anyone they perceive as having too much or being too successful. Carbon emitting industries certainly fall under that category. Auto manufacturers likely wouldn't (at least Martin admitted he wouldn't tax them when he was PM.)
Liberals should tread carefully. If a carbon tax looks like the son of NEP then Alberta is gone. A republic is unlikely but sovereignty association through the immediate implementation of the firewall is all but guaranteed. Anyone who believes Alberta will stick around for another Liberal assault disguised as an act of environmental penance doesn't really understand this province or it's underlying sentiment.
"Aging_Redneck" said If there is another NEP, I believe that we would get a separatist movement pop up overnight with about 30% voter support. I would be one of them.
At the tail end of Martin's Liberal government - support was polled at 44% and that was before talk of an NEP (though admittedly they were musing about carbon taxes but nothing was definitive as Martin for his faults, didn't want to harm the economy of the ROC).
Harper took the wind out of the sails of the separatists and I doubt there would be an outright separation if Dion and the Liberal Party declared war on Alberta, but I am confident that the Firewall would be erected and a credible and solid separatist movement would be created that would dog Canadian politics for years to come.
It's a legal yet immoral way to screw Alberta corps out of their money for Ontario's benefit, and cost a lot of albertan workers their jobs, houses, and sometimes families.

There's nothing more uncanadian than fucking with my livelihood. Ottawa can go fuck themselves if I hit the unemployment lines just so people in Ontario can save 15cents on gas. I don't see Ottawa offering to subsidize my truck loan for an Ontario built truck.
The National Energy Policy was created by the Liberals as a direct attack on Alberta which they feared was becoming too wealthy and influential and they were catching a lot of flack from their power base in central Canada over.
This was also the first time in Canadian history that the federal government actually created a policy to deliberately damage another province.
"The major factor behind the NEP wasn’t Canadianization or getting more from the industry or even self-sufficiency. The determinant factor was the fiscal imbalance between the provinces and the federal government.... Our proposal was to increase Ottawa’s share appreciably, so that the share of the producing provinces would decline significantly and the industry’s share would decline somewhat."
-Rt. Honourable Marc Lalonde, Liberal Minister of Energy
To say that it destroyed 10s of thousands of families and businesses literally overnight would still be an understatement. I personally will never forgive the Liberal party for what it did and will never tolerate it happening again.

"Despite the lack of a serious instrument for the expression of separatist values, separatist sentiment is virtually universal amongst people born and raised in Alberta. The class of federal-government beneficiaries here is small. Most Albertans are vaguely aware that Confederation, for us, is a huge financial rip-off, with outgoing net government transfers amounting to thousands of dollars a head every year. It is a mystery to us exactly what we get for our federal taxes nowadays. Sit down and try to work it out sometime if you're an Albertan, remembering that health, welfare, and education are provincially funded and administered. What, are they spending the money on our elite, powerfully equipped armed forces?
Asked outright "Stay or go?", most Albertans (real Albertans, not people who came over from Montreal at age 16) will tell you "Go", privately. It's not just the rural loonies, either: as a rule, the more you know about trying to run a business, the more likely you are to answer "Go". I have a lot of trouble making Easterners understand this. If any well-known leader decides to step up and give a voice to Alberta separatism, they will learn. And fast."
An many recently moved to alberta worker would probably support separtion, too. These people left their homes to find work, I think many would leave their country if their country threatens to take that work away from them.
Afterall, thats carbon that I own, and should have the right to sell, right?
