Yeah um not such a Stealthy price is it? I think its a waste of money at that price. Its worth an attack sub.
Actually the price of a Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier.
The USAF only had 21 and this is the first loss. Actually not bad for an aircraft in service for 20 years...but aircraft do unfortunately have a higher loss rate compared to Aircraft Carriers.
Whether or not it is worth it, is very debatable. Over Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Iraq it was irreplaceable, in the hot AAA environments.
This is the sort of thing that you wake the President about.

If I remember right, a stealth bomber has never been shot down. That's a good track record.
During the Kosovo War a F-117 Stealth Night Hawk was shot down by the Serbs with a lucky shot because the bomb bay doors were open which made it visible to radar for a second and that's all it took..

The price of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier is 5 billion dollars , with the annual operating cost of 3 billion dollars. Price was ten years ago, not that same price range as a stealth bomber.

I concur---I'm claiming a hangover.
Mega loss regardless.
I recall, in the 1970 reading a speech given to British Aerospace Industry leaders by the Brit defence minister. He recall the numbers and cost of different aircraft from WW2 until then. As to the escalating complexity and cost of aircraft, he predicted, if that trend continued, that by the first decade of the next century (now) that the US could only purchase 1 aircraft a year.

Hope all the first responders had full body and breathing protection. Some of the advanced composites used in stealth aircraft are extremely hazardous if damaged or burned.
Glad to see the pilots made it, hopefully we will get to find out what caused the crash.
Actually the rescue people would not be in harms way.
The crew punched out so would in practice be well separated from the aircraft. The firetrucks are very off road capable and equiped with a foam cannon directed from the cab. The four-man cab has a silversuited, SCUBA equiped man on each door. The driver and connon operator occupy the centre positions. The cab is NBC proof.
The wreck would be pounced upon by the foam trucks ASAP to salvage as much as possible. Foam dropping Helo's are another asset.

We have heard all we are going to. The media report of the crash is unusual....surprised we heard that...I guess too many loose lipped civilians were about.

Concur, the USAF likes to keep things quiet as much as possible when there is an incident or accident. I have heard of two C-17 incidents, one involved a missle strike which I have never seen publicized, the other can be seen here; http://www.boeing.com/news/frontiers/ar ... _ids1.html
I jus hope they aren't stuck with the bill.....
