The big news: Earth is doomed to fry and then be gobbled up by the dying Sun. But don't blow your savings on an Apocalypse Party just yet, for astronomers say the planet's demise is 7.6 billion years away.

Anyone who disagrees should be thrown in prison for crimes against the future.

Really? I thought it would be the Liberals fault and Harper would scream bloody murder while supressing all info related to this event with the odd press release stating that the government is working on it.

7.6? I thought it would only take 5 billion years.

What! The horror! I've been misled!

Well, guess we better just enjoy the extra 2.6 million years. ;)

Unless we get hit by that meteor that has a 1-in-50 chance of hitting the Earth around 2800. Or if those guys who say Earth will be nearly destroyed by a recurring phenemenom in 700 million years are right... whatever the phenomenom is. I just don't remember. Does it really matter?

With several billion years of science and research and human accomplishment yet to come I imagine we'll find a way to either refuel the sun for a few more billion years or we'll find a way to move the entire earth to a safer solar system.

It might be easier to just move the planet.

    not that long....
A billion years from now, as the Sun slowly expands, the oceans will evaporate, filling the atmosphere with water vapour (a potent greenhouse gas) and triggering runaway global warming.

But a billion years of technology development at the pace of the last two centuries should provide many options.......

It's all the American's fault! If they hadn't landed on the moon then we wouldn't have to worry about the end of the world.

Besides, I have it on good authority the world is actually going to end on December 21, 2012.

Just before Christmas, too. So, I won't have to buy presents that year...I'll save a bundle....

Maybe with the money I save I'll be able to go on a trip....
