OTTAWA and QUEBEC — The Harper government is staying mum on whether it will officially recognize the breakaway state of Kosovo, a decision that it wants to ensure has no impact on Canada's ongoing debate over Quebec separatism.

I wish Ottawa never recognises it. And the PQ idiots are stupid to support Kosovo's independance under the motto of "independance of the poeples" because the Albanians of Kosovo are the British of New France.

Canada is acting correctly in remaining silent... this was an unilateral secession, and therefore it doesn't really have any legal backing. On the other hand it's about certain a referendum in Kosovo would have resulting in an overwhelming majority to separatists, but regardless. Had there been such a referendum, I'd be the first one jumping to say "recognize them!", but since there hasn't been one I'll rather say we should wait and see what the UN decides about Kosovo - then we should simply follow the resulting train of thought. I'm just hoping there won't be a veto or such crap... hmm... on second thought, maybe it'd just be best for Canada to not just follow the UN's "official opinion" since a veto could screw it up (I think, I'm not sure how things function when it comes to recognizing states honestly), but rather see how the majority of the world's countries react and act accordingly to that.

    this was an unilateral secession

so was the Declaration of Independence, without a referendum...

anyway, such a vote would pass 90% easy.. over 90% of Kosovo is Albanian.

I am pretty sure the UN decided about Kosovo a long time ago..

' an integral part of Serbia'

I gotta find that damn resolution... i think its 1244..

Canada's best bet is to do nothing.....
