I find this article not surprising in the least coming from the commy star...uuuu I mean the star. Why not mention any of the promises he DID keep oooo wait a minute, half of them the Liberal are holding up, like tough on crime laws that 99% of Canadians are demanding!

Though, I think it is nice to have an article like this nit picking at the gov, at least they can't focus on multi billion dollar scandles and missmanagment!

    Yeah, something to complain about...

    Tax cuts:

GST cut from 7 to 6 to 5 per cent. Delivered.

"Immediate tax relief for all Canadians." Not delivered.

(Their first budget raised the lowest income tax rate by a half-percentage point; it was later returned to its earlier level.)

    Child care:

$1,200 child-care benefit. Delivered, but taxed back.

125,000 new child-care spaces. Not delivered.

    Patient wait times guarantee:

"Treatment within clinically acceptable waiting times" or patient transferred to another jurisdiction. Not delivered.

    Government accountability:

Accountability Act. Delivered. (But not as strict as promised.)

    Law and order:

Scrapping of long-gu registry. Not delivered.

Bills to ease prosecutions of gun, gang and drug crimes and stiffen some jail penalties. Not passed yet.

    Military:

More spending on the Canadian armed forces. Delivered.

    my comments

how does the star claim they didn't provide tax relief to candians ? they did cut the gst and cut other things as well in budgets, there was significant tax relief in both budgets .

on scraping the gun registry ( the toronto star is bigest suporter of it and doesn't want to see it scraped anyways , they have always supported it so why would they care if it hadn't happened yet , that one really confuses me )

on crime bills the liberal senate is stalling them , they have been passed by house of commons .

and how do they claim accountabilty act was not as strict as promised ? bill was passed , so i' confudsed by that one as being a broken promise , makes no sense how they can claim that when it was passed into law.

right on ryan ...you cant trust this group of tories anymore than you could mulroney... I remember mulroney trying to claw back the old age pensions... he was confronted by a woman who called him a liar! ..so nothing has changed.. tory= liar

thats right , with a minority gov't and a senate controlled by the official opposition...how can we ever expect our gov't to function properly...and for all promises to be kept when even the opinion of the weather is cause for an argument!!!

We need an elected senate in order for our gov't to work properly!!

I don't really think the Conservatives lied. I think they meant to do everything they talked about, however once in power it became less important for them to keep their promises and some of them probably became unmanageable.

I know you think I pick on mulroney .. fact is he was the last conservative government before Harper... the harper government has lied about alot of things... like I said I have studied Canadian History, political science.. and have worked on a thesis re the same. whenever the tories are in power the country is in crisis of some kind.. right now its war , economy , and the environment.. Harpers cabinet is made up of leftovers... mostly from Mike Harris government,, and look what he did to ontario.. so it more about tory policy.. Mulroney sucked and so does harper.. here is a little reminder... In 1985, Solange Denis (b. 1922), a 63-year-old Ottawa woman, made national media headlines during a protest by seniors of the Conservative government's plan to limit the inflation protection on Old Age Security pensions. Denis strongly attacked Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, contending that "You made promises that you wouldn't touch anything…you lied to us. I was made to vote for you and then it's Goodbye Charlie Brown," ("You 'lied' on pensions, Mulroney told", Toronto Star (June 20, 1985).) said Denis. The government later backed down on the proposal.

thats part of the problem , under a tight minority a alot of things can't get done or be done properly . its just the ways things are in this type of situation.

Ask Bob Rea.... Canada would be having "Layton days"...

Mind you, everyone would have a civil service job.

the toronto star just puts of stuff like this to stir shit up, its not very surprising

good question is when did they bother to write up an article about all dalton mcguintys broken promises and go thru all of them .
i'm sure it would be a much bigger list .

This whole broken promises crap is endemic to all politicians and to say one party is guilty and one party isn't is pure unadultered crap.

For example we have the following:

Pierre Trudeau: who campaigned in 1974 against wage and price conrols, only to implement them once in office; who campaigned in 1980 against the Clark government for raising gas taxes, only to jack them up even higher himself.

We have had Brian Mulroney, who campaigned against free trade as a candidate for the Tory leadership, only to embrace it once in power.

We have had Jean Chretien, who promised the abolition of the GST, the renegotiation of NAFTA, an end to Tory spending cuts. Were still waiting.
