Outside Royal Canadian Legion Branch 91, the Canadian flag is once again flying at half-mast in honour of another Canadian military casualty in Afghanistan.

Let's see! The Legion Branches all voted. They used a democratic means to justify their ends so what business is it of the Federal Tory Party to intervene with a lame brain committee set up primarily to make Canadians think that the Tories are on top of something. What complete and utter stupidity. :D

If I remember correctly the ship/base/organization has to wait for a message from National Defence Headquarters to say from what day and/or time flags will be at half-mast, and which bases/ships/organizations will be flying at half-mast. Usually the day of the funeral is the day flags are rehoisted, but the start time is dictated by NDHQ to ensure everyone is flying at half-mast at the same time.

I know that while I was in Afghanistan we lowered our flags to half mast for every death of a soldier. If we do it I don't see why it should be a problem for the legions.

Interesting that after 6 years of Canadians fighting in Afghanistan, this has become the focus only in the last 2. Why would that be?

Maybe its more a question of how long.. cause we have one legion for 10 days, and one does nothing.

so the next question is how long is the flag at half-mast ??

It wasn't. Con short term memory?

In that thread it was discussed at length and it seems that aside from blaming the Liberals for the motion put forth by a CPC MP the thought was that the flag protocol was good as is.

Funny how you seem to be insinuating that ever since Harper came to power that the flag lowering protocol is only now a focus.

In addition to being flat out wrong you and most of the military members on the forum agreed that it was wrong to change said protocol and blamed the Liberals for a CPC bill that was supported by almost the whole house.

If it was wrong for the gov't to change the protocol back then then why is it OK to do so now or even to initiate a comittee with the posibility of changing it?

The government has no genuine concern in how a flag is flown at a non-governmental organization. The US Flag Law, for instance, is binding upon governmental organizations but advisory for NGO's.

If a Legion branch wants to fly the flag however they want, I suppose that's really the business of their membership.

I should think the Tories would have better things to be about than this.
