Government says no to carbon tax

Good. This just proves that the Conservatives haven't got a clue when it comes to the environment, and leaves th opposition parties free to promote themselves as willing to implement this powerful piece of policy.

we are taxed enough. if anything the gov'ts should remove the taxes from compact florecence lights and high efficency furnaces and hot water tanks and for upgrading my windows.

Besides, the proposed tax isn't that much, and they aren't proposing that it go to general revenue. They're proposing a $15/tonne tax that would go back to the provinces / sectors that emitted in the form of a fund for development of technologies for emissions remediation. For reference, Canada currently emits about 750 000 000 tonnes of CO2e per year. The GST earns the government about $30 billion per year. If you set the tax at the same revenue generation of the GST it would be $40/tonne, so we're talking a tax on the order of a third of the GST, which is not much at all, and it would go directly back to reducing emissions.

It's a good plan that won't cost much and will achieve real results.

Now that is a political reality and probably as accurate a guage as anything the politicos commission.

This surprises me.

I was just driving around listening to talk radio. A guy from the Suzuki foundation was on. He was talking like this carbon tax thing was in the bag. Apparently Canadians "all" agree, this extra tax is something they all want, because, of course, "all" scientists agree; apocalypse through global warming is inevitable without the tax.

It was interesting. People were calling up and trying to pin him down. They were trying to get him to admit it was a tax on gas and heating fuel he wanted, and if so how much. I'm not sure, but I think buried in amongst the gobbledy gook, he did say yes the green guys did want a tax on gas, and heating fuel, but no power on earth could get him to offer a dollar sign estimate per user.

So... then it is taxed.

Does that mean we are going to use less? Is the emission going to be less? All that is going to happen, is that people are paying more. What will the governement do with all that tax money?

Are they going to make sure the energy efficient appliances are going to be cheaper? That new furnaces are going to be cheaper? I don't think so...

I paid eco-taxes. Lots. And it didn't help. I didn't drive a kilometer less with my car. It costed more to fill the tank, but walking was not really an option... I paid eco taxes to heat my house. Did I heat it less? No of course not. I only paid more...

Everyone's in favour of the environment until they have to pay for it. Let's face it: tax or no tax, human beings are going to burn just about every drop of oil on this planet. It is the only reliable source of readily available cheap energy. Not to mention all the other services that oil provides, from pesticide production to plastics.

My son got a goody bag at a recent birthday party. In it was alittle plastic game that didn't work. So we had to toss it. That plastic came from oil, likely pulled up from the Middle East somewhere, shipped via tanker and/or pipeline to a chemical plant in China where it was turned into precursors and then sent to a plastics plant (again, probably in China) and then to a manufacturer (again, in China) where it was made into this toy. From there, it would have been put on a large container vessel and sent to North America, and then gone by rail or truck to warehouses throughout North America. Then it was trucked to dollar stores and picked up by consumers, and from there into my son's goody bag. But of course, it didn't work, so it was chucked right away and will spend the next thousand years or so decomposing in a landfill somewhere. Now what was the point of all that?

I think that is a little too general. I don't mind paying. It just depends on what. Just a simple tax doesn't do the trick.

I buy energy saving lightbulbs, I hate the plastic bags you get in the store here, so I bring my own, I rather have the bio-disposable foodcontainers in school than the non-bio ones, and I am willing to pay for that. But just a simple tax, so Big Brother can tell me I can go to sleep, they will watch over me? No thanks. They don't do it the way I want it to be done, and that is the reason I disagree with eco-taxing.

In your opinion maybe not..... but they do understand economics, which is more than any socialist ever will.

Now, if I may be so bold as to point out that since China the biggest polluter on the planet won't do anything to curb pollution, because it would detrimentally effect their economy, W The F should we destroy ours just so you people can feel good about yourselves.

So that all those shipping companies, chemical companies, manufacturing companies, and oil companies could make money. So that the parents of the birthday kid could feel like good citizens because they consumed. Remember, if you don't buy crappy products made by the Chinese, you're an America-hating communist!
