The parents of a five-year-old girl travelling alone are furious with WestJet for breaking its own guidelines and allowing a stranger to accompany the child off a flight.

Air Canada may lose your luggage, but WestJet will lose your kid. I'm sticking with Air Canada.

Too bad about this. I have always preferred WestJet to Air Canada but this is going to make people jeer at those syrupy commercials of theirs.

Right, maybe they should try a little harder!

Another question... Would you let your 5-year old child go on a plane that doesn't fly straight to the place she has to go?

I sure as hell wouldn't! WestJet is at fault here, but the parents are imo kinda not so responsible too. They should feel lucky this guy showed up, but they should have taken their child themselves. Non of this would have happened. Companies screw up, and they do regularly. As parents, you can not. This was a screw up on their part.

What morons would allow their five year old kid to ride on a plane alone, no matter how competent the transport company is? Especially the child's first time on such a long flight.

Nobody's allowed to make a mistake? Why would you choose AC over West Jet? is it a Union thing?

Here's a good example of "I paid my money so someone should look after me...........no matter how stupid my decision." These would be the same people who'd complain because WestJet wouldn't hand over their daughter because they forgot their ID at home too. Works both ways and I'd choose WestJet over AC anytime on the basis of comfort, price and reliability in all aspects of their system.

Because she had to go to Quebec and ended up in Winnipeg, where she could call her dad from the cell phone of the stranger sitting next to her, who took care of her, Lily.

Edit: Why so judgemental? The child is Lily. You don't even let your child walk to school alone on the first day at that age, why let it fly alone at such a young age? She wasn't 13!

Don't you watch news Lily? Geesh, I'll see if I can find it

I'm not surprised at all. I fly Westjet or AC at least every second week sometimes more and I've seen plenty of that. The fact someone would trust their young child (not a young teen) with anyone else is looking for trouble. It was the kid's first flight and there should have been a parent on the flight with her. If for nothing else, to monitor the child's reaction to traveling in that mode. What if the child was terrified and or sick? That's irresponsible as far as I'm concerned.

    Here you go, Lily...

During an earlier stopover in Winnipeg, the little girl had prepared to get off the plane, until another passenger intervened.

13 and 5 is quite the difference. We are not discussing the fact UM, we are discussing the irresponsability of the parents according to THEIR child. Not your (ir)responsabilty towards YOUR child.

Lily this isn't about you and your 13 year old flying and the other one loving to fly.

Would you put your 5 year old daughter on a plane ride with multiple stops, alone and for the first time?

It's irresponsible for parents to shuffle their child off alone like that when they have no clue as to their reaction in that situation.
