More than $45 million has recently been paid to residential school lawyers — one of the largest legal bills in Canadian history.

I wonder if Alain Jolicoeur was in charge of Indian affairs when the residential school problems were going on. :-)

Not a lot of Liberal involvement here either.
But then, by their concept of "history", this must be Harpers fault anyways.

Sanderson's lawyer is Regina-based Tony Merchant, who is not among the group that has been paid. Federal officials said Merchant's legal bill, which will be at least $25 million, is still under dispute.

What's the point? It's yet another one of your CPC circle-jerk threads.

The Indian affairs ministry, and the governments that ran them believed that the best way to deal with the natives was to absorb them into Canadian culture. That was the purpose of the schools but, as with almost everything that department touches, it turned to shit.

It's not fair to blame the taxpayers of the time because few knew and would have supported such a crime. Had they known the revolting extent, I'm sure they would have spoken out, although their protest probably would have been drowned out by a transit strike in Toronto or such.

What was criminal were the people who knew and did nothing. I'm sure the usual people will flood in to circle the wagons but someone must have known and I hope they rot in that special hell.
