MASUM GHAR, Afghanistan - There's nothing quite like a snappy military salute, but here in Afghanistan you don't see it very often.

you never salute in a war theater, it gives potential snipers prime targets.

Never have and never will salute in an active environment.

Too true. i found this sentence interesting though:

With the notable exception of U.S. forces, the traditional military greeting is pretty much a non-starter in Afghanistan.

Because the media with their knowledge of the Canadian Military just "discovered" that fact.

Now it's out. Better spool up another inquiry.

    De rigeur in warzones.

I remember reading somewhere that the traditional initiation for new US officers in the DMZ is a nice sharp salute in full view of the North Korean snipers. The North Koreans usually give one too just for the fun of it.

SOP. What an indicator of the lack of expertise in the chattering classes.

We never wore insignia in the field. Wear your bars and get a lobotomy.
