"This is a significant strategic change, because traditionally in the Afghan theatre of war, the minute the fall ends and winter begins, most military activity dies down," said Ram, a former Canadian soldier who teaches at the American Military University in Charles Town, W.Va.

    What does this guy teach?

Military activity in the northern reaches of the temperate zone especially alpine areas dies down for good and valid reason.

The taliban are not the Red Army before Moscow. The Taliban lack the logistical, technological advantages the Red Army had. Despite this the Russians only achieved success in their winter offensive at great cost. The Chinese winter offensive in Korea was blunted by frost-bite and cold weather the same as the UN forces.

Winter warfare demands better supply than warm weather....warm food and a steady supply of cold weather clothing.....The taliban supply system of man-pack infiltration is frustrated and neutralized by winter.

So in theory, our better equipped troops will laugh in the face of winter while the Taliban freezes to death in the dark. I can live with that.

I doubt our troops will laugh at the cold anymore than you will this winter......soldiers bitch....there is nothing pleasant about field duty in cold rain and snow regardless of equipment and supply....it's not a snow-mobile weekend.

For the Taliban, the image of the WW2 Whermacht before Moscow is likely accurate.
