So... what does that mean? Just an open threat or will they do something stupid?

China does this all the time and the will say it anyone who will listen. Right out of the Nazi playbook of say a lie loud enough and long enough until it is seen as fact.

All it takes is one misunderstanding away from nuclear annihilation. Other than that it is business as usual.

More people taken hostage, I suppose.

China barks, but is afraid to bite. They'd rather pick on individuals than try to take on some government who could bloody their nose. They think they save 'face' in doing that.

A bunch of live fire exercises all around the island by the Chinese Navy.

China just announced live-fire exercises surrounding Taiwan between Thursday and Sunday, requesting ships and flights avoid these areas

The bruised ego of China will only stoke them to ever more brazen acts.

China won't do shit. They're surrounded by countries that hate them. Their military is poorly trained and poorly equipped, they just have a lot of bodies to throw. China starting shit would just be ukraine 2.0 and they know it. The only advantage they have is Taiwan is small.

Have hostages actually been taken? I haven't seen anything about this.

Not yet, but Herb made a joke about it above, but that seems to be the way they treat foreign relations now. Take people hostage and torture them till their countries do what China wants.
