Canada Passes New Regulations to Stop People Driving Without Headlights at Night

I'm surprised this even needed to be established as a regulation. It's just too damn obvious to me.

The title is misleading, as the federal government has no jurisdiction over vehicular operations, that falls under each province to manage and it is already illegal in most provinces to drive without your lights on.

Having said that, it's good to see that manufacturing loophole being closed at the federal level to try and reduce the number of idiots who think their daytime running lights are good enough in a blizzard or fog or at night.

It's a good thing. Too many people don't know or realise that their taillights don't go on in tandem with their daytime running lights. Living in on the Wet Coast, its frustrating seeing cars that are nigh invisible in the rain because driver are unaware of that fact, or don't care.

Isn't this something the police should be enforcing? I've noticed in the last several years (or more) that there is a fundamental lack of policing when it comes to drivers. Police need to seriously go back to speed traps, pulling over dangerous drivers, enforcing the traffic laws that most people don't give a damn about.

And....don't even get me started on the number of people using their phones behind the wheel, and even on the damn highways!

They should; but they obviously can’t be everywhere. This solves the problem more consistently.

Bought my imported Japanese minitruck, a 1991 so it was required by law to have DRLs. They just installed $2 worth of parts and a few mins work to make the light come on low beam as soon as the ignition switch went on. Tailights too, that circuit is already there.
The 20015 & 2014 Jeep had totally separate devices for DRLs. so much so you had to hunt down replacement lights for Canadian Jeeps as the USA STILL hadn't required them.
The Saturn turns on the low beam as soon as you shift to drive, but as I found out later from a cop, not the taillights.
Many times driving west on Hwy 16 you'd see ghost car coming out of the pissing rain. There just aren't that many 30 year old vehicles on the roads these days so they were Americans coming off the ferry from Alaska.
Now they have these fancy DRLs that adds hundreds of dollars to each vehicle's price when IMHO that $2 solution the importer did makes the most sense.

I set it when I bought the cars, and haven't changed them since. Every car should have this function. It's not rocket surgery.

I keep my VW on the 'auto' setting for lights. Prevents me from accidently keeping them on and draining my battery. Did that once many years ago.

Some time back, when I had my second Thunderbird, I found the daytime running lights to be a nuisance because one of mine had a habit or burning out every so often. Myself and a friend rigged the wiring so that I had a little toggle switch (hidden under the driver's side of the dash) in which I could keep them off.

Daytime running lights now are less of a pain because they are mostly LEDs on the newer vehicles.

You have a VW, they only have daytime walking lights.

Used to have to drive work trucks with lights on since the 1980s. Warn, write up, suspended, fired if you didn't.
40 yrs and they're still "working on it".
And that headline... implying the gov't is 'forcing' individuals to do something instead of setting rules for auto makers - that's 90% of what he's talking about.

Yeah if I were King, I might think of forcing you to have DRLs at least. Just to get those old shitheaps off the road and stimulate the economy.
AFAIC a;; those rtromod TV shows - fuck 'em I'd require by law if you rebuild that '57 Chevy you MUST add 3 point seatbelts to use it on the road.
