Almost as weird as making a journalist your finance minister or a graphic artist your minister of health.

Also, I'm sure unlike the new head of the NOAA, both the ministers of Health and Finance believe both health and finance to be real.

It would be if the health minister was an anti-vaxxer and the finance minister thought accounting was a global conspiracy. Fortunately neither is the case.

The analogy would have some weight if Freeland were a committed anarchist who didn’t believe in money. Regarding subject expertise, how many of our finance ministers have been expert academic economists with a large body of published work in their field? Actually, many of them have just been male lawyers of a certain age. Freeland is the outstanding performer in the current cabinet. She has proved herself time and time again, e.g. NAFTA, CETA. At this stage there can be no question in any reasonable person’s mind that she would be well able for any portfolio. We’re lucky to have her in government.

That's pretty much what a degree from Harvard and being a Rhodes Scholar means. She may have studied Russian and Slavic studies, but the experience gave her a range of skills and prepared her for a great deal of different challenges.

She is brilliant and incredibly industrious.

You shouldn't diss O'Toole's Shadow Cabinet like that, they may revoke your 'Good Conservative' card.

Nothing when they drift from their chosen fields.

The first rule of any normal organization is, that to be successful you have to put the best people with the knowledge and expertise into the proper positions and all the degrees and Rhodes Scholarships in the world won't change that. By putting people into positions that they have no relevant experience and expertise is almost always a recipe for failure.

There are two simple reasons these people were selected for the positions and that's their sex and the fact that they will offer no opposition to the PM's policies. But on the plus side Christiya Freeland despite her lack of expertise in the field made Canadian history as the first woman to hold the position of Finance Minister.

But since some people on here are losing their collective minds over my comment allow me to point out that it doesn't matter what a persons beliefs are. If they're put into a position of power that they know sweet fuck all about in hindsight it will be regarded as a mistake and it doesn't matter if it's NOAA or the Liberal Caucus.

They already did when I fought vehemently against electing the current Red Tory. And, if O'Toole gets elected and picks the same type of unqualified people to fill the position of Finance Minister and Health Minister because of gender and lack of a backbone then I'll rail against those appointments to.

Mind if I hold you to that? It's good to see integrity isn't a dying art.

Boris Johnson studied Classics at Oxford. Does that make him unfit to be PM? Of course, he turned out to be unfit for other reasons. Maggie Thatcher read chemistry... we could go on.
