A German icebreaker carrying scientists on a year-long international expedition in the High Arctic has reached the North Pole, after making an unplanned detour because of lighter-than-usual sea ice conditions.
Reduced sea-ice extent and thickness would increase the seasonal duration of navigation on rivers and in coastal areas that are presently affected by seasonal ice cover and may increase navigability in the Arctic Ocean.
