Bull crap from a liberal paid periodical and liberal biased survey companies and statistics.

In any other moment it would be cunning, given that the Tories are currently in an absolutely terrible state of disorganization & infighting and can't even find their ass with both hands right now. Trudeau probably could get his majority back and eliminate altogether the need to make deals with the Dippers and Bloc. But it would be the height of partisan irresponsibility to make people line up in crowds to vote with the epidemic still ongoing. It would wipe out altogether any of the government's credibility from their pronouncements about safety through distancing if they called for an election. Doing something that nakedly self-serving during an epidemic would probably result in a smaller minority than the Libs have already as they would certainly be punished by the voters for it.

I would not put a snap election past Justin. The greens and the NDP are sure to take a hit as during a pandemic people who will be voting will tend to vote for the party in office than to rock the boat. I think the greens will have the most to lose and that will boost Justin into majority territory. I can't see the conservatives losing any votes but I can't see them winning over anyone who isn't already in their camp already.

Calling a snap election would also waste a bunch of money that could be better served trying to help the people affected, and would make Trudeau look like more of a self-serving ass.

On the other hand, a snap election call would show how craven the Liberals really are and turn the public against them; to pull that kind of shit in the middle of this pandemic. Though, even if it did happen like that, we’d just be back to status quo ante with a minority Liberal government.

Which is all just more all-Canadian political comedy. The Liberals could do something that disgusting and cynical and still essentially win because:

    - the Tories have no leader
    - the Tories have no coherent policy at all right now
    - the Tories are still in danger of another schism between the moderates and the hardcores
    - the Tories have given no one any positive reason at all to vote for them, aside from the traditional "we're not Liberals" angle they use every election
    - the NDP have no chance at all of being trusted enough to ever even sniff at becoming the government

    Like, oi. :|

    No kidding!

WTF is the point of doing all that bs right now?

And that wouldn't stop one of the idiots who voted for him last time.

After the blackface, the corruption, the tit grabbing, the gun grabbing,
the economic disaster, the dancing, the complete embarrassment.....

Let's face it, he could take of those illegal guns, start shooting people
at the Cenotaph, and still win an election.

    It's like Trump.

Trump takes craven political power grabs to a whole new level. This minority government will only last as long as all agreed in supporting it are loyal to the cause and they get something out of it. This pandemic isn’t going away anytime soon and the writ will be dropped sooner than later. The liberals may want to hold off for better results but why would they gamble on that? Next year they may be in a much worse position than now.

Never let a good crisis go to waste. Politically speaking, its a brilliant move. The article states that Trudeau has a 77% approval rating. That is astronomical! Timing is everything in politics. You have to strike while the iron is hot. Its like playing the markets, you need to lock in your gains. President George H.W. Bush had an 89% approval rating in Feb 1991. The economy was good. He had just overwhelmingly won a war in a few months that everyone was saying was going to become another Vietnam. Imagine if he could have called for the election than? He would have been a shoo-in. Than the recession came. We all know what happened next.

Its the same for Justin now. People that are laid off now are getting their money from CERB. That is not going to last forever. I'm sure that it will get a few extensions, but one day the spigot will run dry. Everyone has this image in their head that they are being good citizens staying home and collecting their money. They think that this will all be over in a few months, and that they will be going back to their old job and way of life. Lots of us are never going back to our old jobs. A lot of good paying jobs are gone forever. Companies are going under, never to return. Lots of shitty new low paying jobs (like Amazon, Walmart, grocery stores, food delivery, etc.) will be taking their place. Its when CERB eventually runs out, and those people that were enjoying it start getting pushed to take those shitty lower paying jobs, that they will start to turn on the party in power. Get their votes now while you still can. 77% approval ratings do not grow on trees. Just ask George H.W. Bush.

I want an election. I have a feeling Trudeau would go down faster than a hooker on a Saturday night. We can't afford to 'let this government play out it's four years' as the article states.

I don’t think a snap election is warranted or being contemplated by the current government for reasons that others have listed above.

Also point of fact regarding the OP, Maclean's is not liberal-paid or even particularly liberal-friendly as these recent covers illustrate:

There also doesn’t seem to be any support for the claim that Abacus data is somehow in bed with the liberals. Some people just can’t handle opinions they don’t agree with and feel the need to invent accusations it seems.

And that's largely for the same reason that Trump won (and might win again) in the U.S. The conservatives need a leader that doesn't suck. Just as the Democrats do.
