When shit like this goes down even if it's classified there's still chatter about it or around it if it concerns a US asset.

Yes though a lot of Western countries are turning to long term if not life in prison in the last 30 years or so. Yet the death penalty is still an option. I would suspect if there was a HOT war going on the death penalty would be imposed vs jail time.
