Unfortunately for Horgan and the NDP, BC is still a free market society so the oil companies can charge us what ever the fuck they want and that includes a fee for having to buy American and not allowing new pipelines
What goes around comes around but it is interesting that they avoided the topic of "taxes as a price driver"?
People have to remember this inquiry won't change anything, because the higher the gas price the more the taxes collected by the Fed's the Province, and the municipalities.
Glad I live up north.
Now you can tell us all the reason you pay 34c a litre MORE than I do is because there's 17c more taxes and thank God the oil companies are free to teach us a lesson!

They say above 60 cents goes to taxes in the lower mainland. I'm going to say 65.
There's also this:
Jason Parent with the petroleum consulting company the Kent Group says this adds to the refining cost which ultimately gets passed along to consumers.
So I'm going to say about 70 cents a litre in the lower mainland goes to sticky fingers in government. That's a lot. After that everybody still has to make a profit and simple observation tells me fluctuations day to day, month to month can be more radical in the lower mainland.
After that I don't give a shit what the state-run media tells me about a government report.
Here's a cool map of what we pay day to day for gas in the lower mainland:

You go ahead and "say" whatever you want.
Thanks for the permission. Be clear what I'm saying then. I'm estimating 70 cents a litre goes to government in the lower mainland and that's too much.
And it's probably more than 70 cents because all the companies along the chain most likely have to pay extra taxes and get burned by unnecessary regulations.
All taxes ignored, southern BC pays 13c a litre more and one sentence later you're trying to say taxes have something to do with it? And cheering that the oil companies can gouge what they want? Half a billion a year MORE than market value?
Glad I live up north.

My point was that this "inquiry" is the typical NDP less than useless exercise because:
1. The gov't can do nothing to change the price of gas since it's a free market;
2. The Gov't benefits greatly from high gas prices;
3. The Gov't refuses to address the fact that #2 is a direct factor of high gas prices;
But, carry on with your anti oil company rant all you want because, the fact remains that a very large portion of the cost of every litre of oil sold in BC goes to taxes and nobody from the gov't or your side of the fence seem to be concerned about that.
As the matter of fact when people were clamouring for relief from the outrageous prices Horgan kept saying it wasn't his gas increase that caused it which is right but, when you combine it with the other taxes it has an effect and why should the gas companies take less of a profit when the gov't refuses to do the same?
Gas is a supply and demand commodity, gas taxes aren't. So when the supply is low the price will be high, but the percentage of cost from taxes remains the same no matter what the gas supply is doing.
So, given that the gov'ts rip us off regularly is it any wonder that the oil companies feel they can do the same to the residents of BC and you don't have to have a useless inquiry to figure that out.
If you don't want to hear the answers don't ask the questions especially when you can't explain the answer. So I wait with bated breath for Horgan to explain why were paying 13 cents a litre more than the guy in the next province because most of us already know the answer.
You're sort of right about the less than useless exercise. We all knew that
1. They're gouging us because they can get away with it.
2. The NDP's a shadow of it's former self and probably pisses it's bed too even thinking of doing something that would make people squeal "soshulists!"
Like I said a million times. Need another refinery in southern BC.
Pretty simple.
Southern BC has committed itself to a fossil-free future so they're self-disqualified from having another refinery built there.
I wish people would stop lumping all the people in Southern BC into one group of crazy, anti oil, anti logging, anti fishing, anti everything environmentalists because the reality is something totally different.
Now, the Research Co. poll shows, a majority of British Columbians support Ottawa’s recent decision to reapprove the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
Mario Canseco, president of Research Co., explained the pendulum shift by saying “everything changed” when the federal government got involved.
“It’s a lot easier to assemble a group of people to protest a company that is based out of Houston, Texas, than it is to protest a decision that was taken by the federal government,” Canseco said.
“It’s a lot easier for the government to say, ‘We believe this is in the national interest.’”
In the online survey conducted late last month, 56 per cent of residents agreed with the federal government’s decision to reapprove the project. However, almost the same number of people, 59 per cent, expressed dissatisfaction with how the feds handled it.

So, to be honest the problem doesn't lie with the majority of people in southern BC, it lies with Provincial Gov'ts who continue to pander to the fringe element radicals in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, rather than putting the best interest of the entire province and country first.
BTW welcome back.
Considering that the delusion of a new BC refinery hinges on the ludicrous belief that they'll get discounted crude oil from the US, a pipe-dream if there ever was one, the entire idea remains laughable. Yes, because they valiantly say they don't want anything to do with filthy evil rotten Alberta oil, the Americans/Venezuelans/whoever else are going to merrily knock 30 to 40% off the price of a barrel of their product as a reward for British Columbia. Do these people who have economic ideas like this even have the capability walk and chew gum at the same time?
There will be shitloads of discounted crude. As soon as TransMountain gets built and people discover the Chinese will tell us to fuck off with our oil too.
The real delusion is that even if someone wanted to build one the NIMBY crowd would kill it, like they did with all the refineries there used to be.
