Thank You every Canadian Government that played a role in gutting our military. You 've made it easy for foreign powers to take our territory, and to disregard our claims. Time to reinvest in a 3 ocean Navy.

I hate that we've gutted our Navy too, but this really has nothing to do with that. The US refuses to acknowledge any nation's rights in narrow waterways (Strait of Hormuz, Malacca Straits, Taiwan Strait, etc.) because they believe they should have the right to sail anywhere they want.
The joke is on them though, because as their power fades and China eclipses them, they'll wish they had supported Canada's claim.

^^ Sabre rattling doesn't change international law. Russias' belligerent occupation of Crimea isn't changed because Russia has more warships than Ukraine. Ukraine's territorial boundaries are still recognized.
The Northwest Passage doesn't suddenly fall outside the territorial boundaries of Canada just because Pompeo thinks it should.
"Tricks" said To call it illegitimate and to speak of a feud is gratuitously offensive to an ally and neighbour.
Since when has that stopped this garbage administration? Alliances mean nothing to these scum sucking fuckers. You almost wish our current cowardly administration had enough balls to mine the entrance to the Northwest passage.
It's our waters and we'll do as we please with them.

It's our waters and we'll do as we please with them. I'd be fine with long range missile installations. Then the passage is still usable.
Maybe they'll just "eminent domain" us and claim the entire Passage for themselves. MAGA!
Not that we have a right to keep it, not when we refuse to defend it. That's why a nation really doesn't have a right to exist if it won't take the steps necessary to ensure it's sovereignty. What can we do now to stop the US or anyone else from doing what they want up north? Take lots of pictures of their ships using the Passage without permission and take the photos to the United Nations and make some squealing sounds in the General Assembly? Yeah, that actually be a way that Trudeau and the rest of his wimp crowd would think was the "tough" approach to take. Look, we got a note of mild disapproval from the UN! Send it to the White House immediately! Yeah, "tough".

Sorry to say this, but I've been telling you people for fourteen years now that you need a military capable of blunting the US and that if you default your defense to us as you have then you also default your sovereignty to us.
Well, you know Canada quite well. It was always far more important for the national ego to spend a billion on a program to make public toilets tranny-friendly or on apologies to terrorists than it ever was on annoying mundane tasks like national defence.
Like the U.S. Claims to the Mississippi River are 'illegitimate'.
Actually, when the War of 1812 started the British by practice cancelled the 1783 and 1794 treaties that would have given Canada inherited rights on the Mississippi River.
In the subsequent Treaty of Ghent the British tried to gain navigation access to that river again but where the river was no longer a frontier between the US & Britain, nor was it navigable from any British territory at the time the US refused this request and the British ended up not making an issue of it.
In any case, the British cancelled the treaties that would have allowed Canada access to the Mississippi therefore it is not a joke that the US claims sole sovereignty.

Maybe they should spend some time and effort fixing their ever degrading current fleet, before expanding operations?

True.
