Ethiopian Airlines crash: 18 Canadians among the dead

Second 737 MAX-8 to crash. I'm sure Boeing is in "Oh Fuck" mode.

China has grounded all of their 737 Max-8 fleet until the problem is figured out.

Meanwhile, Air Canada and Westjet are saying these planes are fine. Nothing to worry about.

Paraphrasing what I heard on the radio driving in to work...

It is a terrible tragedy. Both there and in Indonesia where the other plane crashed. Truly.

They were saying that failure of a sensor causes the plane to assume a nose down attitude, Boeing issued a directive to counter the problem??????????????

Now another terrible loss of life.

Kind of sounds like sensor tells the computer that airspeed is too low, so computer pitches the nose down to correct airspeed.

Maybe we need to give more control back to the pilots.

They need to ground the fleet and retrofit the fucking broken(?) sensor.

Most pilots get a 1 hour video on an iPad as their training to these new jets. The memo from Boeing on how to recover from a sensor problem is one written page.

The sensor is the least of our worries.

The executives making these statements aren't flying on these planes so they don't care.

We'll need another Air Canada flight 621 incident to remind us that this shit happens here too.

So reading up on this, that plane has an angle of attack sensor on the nose that consists of a little fin that sends a signal to the computer.

Every aircraft has an angle of attack sensor. But on something like a cessna it's a hole in the wing so that when the angle of attack gets to a certain angle, air blows into the hole and sounds a horn. That's a stall warning.

The morons at Boeing, instead of taking that signal and giving the pilots a stall warning, they have the COMPUTER lower the nose of the plane until airspeed is corrected. WHAT THE FUCK!

These pilots have around 10,000 hours flying time by the time they are running one of these. EVERYTHING they've flown to this point has a stall warning. They know what to fucking do when the stall warning sounds. There is NO need to bypass the pilot at this point.

Supposedly the pilot can turn this system off with two switches at the bottom of the console. Air India went strait into the ground with the pilots screaming they had a mechanical failure. So obviously the computer pushes the stick forward harder than your average pilot can pull it back.

Boeing should lose their shirt over this. Big time.
