"This is totally unacceptable," she said.
So the best way to do this is to not sentence them?.
Between 2005 and 2015, the Indigenous inmate population grew by 50 per cent compared to the overall growth rate of 10 per cent.
Indigenous women comprise 37 per cent of all women serving a sentence of more than two years.
Incarceration rates for Indigenous people in some parts of Canada are up to 33 times higher than for non-Indigenous peoples.
She called the statistics "shocking."
Yup it is shocking that 4.3 percent of the population is committing that much of the crime but I wonder how they figure by changing sentencing guidelines for Natives that it'll change anything but the number of criminals in jail while increasing crime?
Maybe they should make the natives accountable for their actions because the two tiered justice system that's been unofficially in place for decades hasn't done one fucking thing to cut down on these rates.
Disgusting.
Do you think, that COPS and lawyers etc are all sitting around and thinking up ways of making indians commit crimes, then catching them, sentencing them and incarcerating them..just for fun? I think they all have better things to do, the fact that this segment of the population is at the head of the line when it comes to representation in jails, have WAY more to do with their economic situation that anything like "white privilege' or 'systemic racism' those are complete and utter BS comments.
Yes, I know. 'Bad Bart' for saying mean things that just happen to be true.
The two tiered justice system people have been talking about for decades is now being officially endorsed by the Federal Gov't.

Sentencing guidelines should be the same for everyone, regardless of colour/race/religion/whatever. Are we not all supposed to be equal?
But....there's always a but. This time it's Trudeau.
So natives are hugely over-represented in jail but somehow they are all getting away with everything and not accountable. Alt-right logic again. lol.
So your alt left logic dictates otherwise?

Nobody is saying they're getting away with anything.
You're not comprehending what's being said.
They are being caught, charged and jailed but if you listen to the convicted, their friends and families, it's always the fault of someone else that they're in that predicament.

Oh I think so. If your hypothesis is that natives aren't being held accountable for their crimes then it doesn't make much sense to offer, as supporting evidence, the fact that indigenous peoples are vastly over-represented on the prison population.
Maybe the reason that indigenous peoples aren't being held accountable is because there is so many indigenous judges and police officers? Or that it's so easy for indigenous peoples to get out of being accountable. They say things like "Oh, the gun just went off" and they walk away.

I think you are the one with the comprehension problems.
I wonder what the breakdown of crimes is like? If it is largely dominated by petty crimes, then maybe reconciliation is a better avenue than locking them up.
Most are in there because they lack self control and don't respond well to rules. Violent crimes are too common for those being incarcerated. Alcohol or drugs are almost always involved. I should mention that almost the same problems existed among the aboriginal people in Taiwan and the Chinese. Ireland underwent 800 years of brutal colonization, so I guess they should get carte blanche and special treatment too.

If it's largely violent crimes, I don't know why we would care about the statistic. I don't care if it's 1% or 50%, if they're hurting people, they belong in prison. It's pretty simple.
