Last year was the second hottest worldwide on record, just behind a sweltering 2016 with signs of climate change ranging from wildfires to a thaw of Arctic ice, a European Union monitoring centre said on Thursday.

Except for all that ocean life that is projected to die from it.
Way better.
It's estimated that during the Cenozoic that the global water temperature average was about 15C warmer than it is now and life flourished...especially in the coral reefs around Manitoulin Island, Ontario.

We're in the Cenozoic Era. I assume you mean at the beginning of it? Specifically the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum? The one that was caused by an influx of carbon in the atmosphere? I thought Carbon doesn't cause warming? There was also a mass extinction of Forams during this time period.
Additionally, we definitely have the same animals around that was present 55 million years ago. /s
The CBC is using some new record put together by the EU.
It's not far out of line though.
The Satellite Temps for the last 39 years from UAH say third warmest.
But the graph from the satellites suggests something a little different than what the Chicken Littles at CBC and the EU are pulling their hair out over.
So that one shows about a degree of global temperature rise from 1978 to 1998.
After that, it's like two goal posts of temp rise are at 1998 and 2016. These were the years of two super El Ninos - which are freaks of ocean confluences of natural forces. Between those two natural occurrences, temps look to more or less level out. The year following 2016 there is a dip in global temps.
All of which replies to CBC/EU hysteria with a big, fat, "So what?"

For us terrestrial beasts, certainly is better. Can't grow crops on an ice field. Additionally, how well do crops grow with drought? Lets ask California!

Still, it was once warm enough off for coral to prosper in Canada.

Pardon, you're right.
Still, it was once warm enough off for coral to prosper in Canada.
Of course, that was 425m years ago.
That may be the case but the corals I referred to were definitely warm water corals.

Go figure

Look up the word ecosystem. It might be important.
