By every measure, Canada is the true place to find 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' Let's stop squandering our good fortune.

Solving the problems of natives has been a recurring theme throughout my entire life which is now six decades and counting. No matter the government or its political affiliation, none have been able to find a solution.

Get rid of the reserve system. Disband Indian Affairs. Rid the government of all departments solely dedicated to native affairs. End the provisions in government that hand over billions of dollars without any accountability for expenditures. Let natives govern their own affairs in the same manner as municipalities. Let them police themselves, provide their own health services, hire their own teachers and tax their own people. No more hand-outs of any kind. Give them the chance to stand on their own two feet without a single instance of government interference or meddling. They keep telling us that is what they want, so best let them get at it. There are many excellent band models in Canada from which they can draw help and support in their efforts.

    R=UP

    Makes perfect sense.

Which is why it will never be done.

How about starting by giving them their land back? They were here when Europeans arrive. They never ceded their land through treaty or war, at least out west here. BY law, it's their land. If you're lucky they'll let you stay on it.

This has the added benefit of solution that has not yet been tried because, as you say, the issue is very old and doesn't seem to moving in any direction very fast.

Hey! That makes you the SAME AGE as most of the residential school survivors!

Whew, good thing you were born white eh! Otherwise that Gord Downie movie could have been about you! 8O

Just another self-congratulatory article that the traditional Canadian media is notorious for. Telling that the only problem they think is significant is the Native one, and that the collapse of the middle class that was employed in manufacturing and resources is sloughed off as being of zero importance. Just a puff piece for a two-faced country of "do gooders" that's as desperate to be seen as nice as a junkie is for their next fix.

How about you finally put your house where your mouth is, and finally give up
your property which you admit is sitting on native land.

    Ultimate two faced hypocrite.

Well, we could settle land claims now or we could wait till some seriously angry native group gets the Supreme Court of Canada to toss us off their land. I suppose you could contract Donny to build ya a wall (8 models available) and set up machine gun posts at the corners.

So you freely admit that the Natives do own the land. Why then are you paying property taxes to the Canadian Gov. IF you really feel that the West of Canada belongs to the Native (1st Nation People) and should be given back to them, will you also rip up all the infra structure that has been put into place. Buildings, Homes, pipe lines, sewers, electricity basically EVERY thing that is there. Because you know the 1st Nation people did not build it and thus have no rights to it. Just like you are implying that you do not have the right to live there because you were not there first.

I don't think I would get kicked off. Probably pay my taxes differently. I think immigrants to Canada and natives of Canada would actually integrate better, but first we have to recognize their legal rights and reconcile for how badly we fucked them. And continue to fuck them. I spent a long time on reserves out west as a young engineer. The impression you have, about them living the high life on welfare, is just not true. Poverty is all over the place on reserves.

My passion is the indigenous people around where I live and how shitty they are doing. Hypocrite? ha ha ha. We all are.

I wish it was about 200 years in the future. I could go become an asteroid miner and enjoy the luxury of getting away, most likely for years on end, from this planet, it's annoying people, and it's tedious nonsense.

Those conditions are present because First Nation Chiefs and Band Leaders are corrupt.

Stratos: Treaty 6 here. Where Zip is the Aboriginal Nations never signed treaty.
