Three Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers tried to clear a path through the ice for the Bella Desgagnés to the community beginning last Friday, but all efforts failed.
The light icebreaker, CCGS Earl Grey, was the first to attempt to cut a path to the shore. When it failed, the medium-sized CCGS Henry Larsen was called in, which also couldn't get through.
The coast guard then sent the strongest icebreaker it has, CCGS Terry Fox, but the ice proved too thick.
And all the government has plans for are some crackerjack slush breakers.....
If only a previous PM had kept his promise to build three heavy, armed icebreakers - can't seem to recall his name ATM, but I bet Google knows...
Yea it's a real fucking shame. Really we should have planned for 7-8 icebreakers in the 25 000+ Tonne class, with modular systems so that they can be outfitted as either an Area-Air + Ballistic-Air Defence configuration, or Anti-Sub Warfare + Surface Combat configuration. 7-8 modular ships would allow us to maintain a standard 1 Air Defence + 4 Surface combat fleet configuration whilst being able to maintain a regular refit schedule.
