People who are hungry are going to steal food. "Let them eat cake." It's a bad sign. The govt should subsidize food banks, get food to the people.Have a swivel servant co-ordinate food that's about to be wasted. I think food banks could use trucks to pick up donated food. Shouldn't be up to a city mayor to deal with this by hiring more cops to prevent theft. Just pushing the river that way. You wind up with a lot of people who have become involved with the criminal justice system, which can lead to problems down the road. Leads to rot within society. We need better income redistribution. Time to raise taxes. It will save money down the road.

Taxes are part of the problem. There was an item on the CBC site a few weeks back that the entire country is going to be seeing a 10 to 20% increase in the cost of all food this year, so in a town like this that's suffering the worst effects of the oil collapse something like food theft is just going to get worse. The City of Calgary's been tax-and-spend happy for almost an entire decade so there's no way they can't slough off their responsibility for being part of the problem. As for me and mine we're going to be leaving Calgary within the next five-to-seven years after the kid is done high school and college. It's not just because Calgary's become such an unlikable place lately (which it has), it's almost entirely because it's become too damn expensive even for us college/trade-educated and experienced to stay here for much longer.

When people are stealing steaks and lobster, they aren't doing it because they are hungry.

It's for cash and drugs, and being controlled by criminal gangs who then push
    the goods into restaurants.

"a certain demographic" means the owners know full well who is stealing and why.

Squeeze the front line thieves to get the drug runners, squeeze the runners
to get to the restaurants, and make the penalties high enough that it isn't worth it.

Fuck you and your taxes, andy.

If you're going to steal, what would you take? "No,no, I can't possibly steal that steak. It's much too expensive. I am poor scum and don't deserve it."

No, I did.Should have done it first. I know that in Vancouver, food banks are struggling to meet demand, that's what set me off. I think people going hungry in our rich countries is disgusting.

To keep people who are going hungry fed, costs money=taxes.BC has a govt that does everything they can to keep taxes low. We also have a fentanyl crisis-because treatment options aren't available.Lots of middle class families affected by kids dying from fentanyl overdose.(Wait only for PD to disappear from CKA)People getting hooked by a medical system that dispenses opioids like candy.Sounds like you've figured out the war on drugs techniques to perfection-how has it worked so far?
