formal Request for Proposal was issued to six aerospace companies in North America and Europe in September 1977. In November 1978, the government announced a short list of two contenders: the General Dynamics F-16, and the McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18. Following further detailed evaluations, the F/A-18 was selected, and a contract for 138 aircraft was concluded in April 1980, with the first two aircraft to be delivered in October 1982. Delivery of the final aircraft occurred in mid-1988. The CF-18 originated in a design by U.S.-based Northrup Aircraft in the early 1970s for a versatile new combined interceptor/strike aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. Although the General Dynamics F-16 won that USAF competition, Northrup then joined with McDonnell-Douglas to revise their “YF-17” design into the F/A-18 and market it to the USN and USMC. In May 1975, the Navy announced that the F/A-18 was their choice for a new fighter/attack (hence the “F/A” preface) aircraft.

I think it's good, but I'm curious to know where you were when you took it. Is it a secret?

Where did you take this from? Is that a NATO AWACS 707?

Great picture. When they were building it I was pretty skeptical, but once completed I found walking through a very emotional experience. Now I think it's one of our best monuments. I think closeness to the National Gallery is accidental, but significant.
