The Chinese Communists aren't going to be too sqeamish about monks burning themselves to death in a protest against their rule.

It worked in Vietnam, a long time ago.

Time for them to deal with that.

That is some way to protest but you'd think they would know for it to be effective the Chinese Government has to give two shits about them first.

There's only 5 million Tibetans in the whole world, and less than around 4 in China.

China has colonized and annexed Tibet, colonization is not about who's got the biggest guns, or the smartest people, it's simply the biggest and most adaptable population. Quite simply put, the 4 million Tibetans are not going to pressure the CCP for any mercy, they have no power. It's game over. Nobody is going to war for 4 million people over 1.3billion.

Tibetans ain't African, they don't know to burn whole cities down to scare the authorities into action. There's not enough of them, and the few that are politically active are still too docile.

RIP monks.

I don't think anyone is calling for war on China. But what happened to all that talk about being more selective when we choose our allies from the UAE thing?

Canada moving towards trade pact with China: minister
$1:
Interim Liberal leader Bob Rae said Canada must have a stronger trade relationship with China "but also one that deals with human-rights issues." He said he hopes the Harper government moves more quickly in negotiating a full free trade deal with the Asian country.

The Liberal theory on China is that by engaging them and playing nice, we'll influence them to be more respective of human rights.

Whomever originally came up with that idea must have been on some pretty strong narcotics at the time.

China is too big to ignore. Again...demographics.

Making money has always trumped human rights.

Bob Rae is just full of bad ideas, doesn't matter if he is wearing red or orange.

What a difference 5 years makes 'eh?

$1:
When Harper first spoke to reporters about what he cast as China's decision to back away from a formal meeting with Canada ahead of the APEC summit, he suggested it was because they didn't want to face criticisms about human rights. A Chinese government official in Beijing responded, saying Harper's comments were ''irresponsible remarks'' because they dealt with internal Chinese matters that should be of no concern to foreign leaders.
...
''Presently we run a massive trade deficit with China and the fact of the matter is that neglecting human rights hasn't opened a lot of doors either, so obviously we don't think you get anywhere by shortchanging your values,'' Harper said

What a difference coming to power makes. Politicians talk out of their asses when they're campaigning on in opposition.

$1:
Prime Minister Stephen Harper took a parting swipe at the record of previous Canadian government for cozying up to China and ignoring its human rights abuses
...
Former prime minister Jean Chretien visited China five times on Team Canada trade missions, but he also launched a body of mid-level officials in Ottawa and Beijing who have met at least once each year since July 1997 under the auspices of the Canada-China Joint Committee on Human Rights. That committee has reportedly not met since Harper's Conservatives came to power last January.

$1:
Canada does not just “go along” in order to “get along.”

We will “go along,” only if we “go” in a direction that advances Canada’s values: freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
-- John Baird (Sept 26, 2011)
