One of the trim tabs on the elevator is gone. They'll start looking there.

They talked about this on Daily Planet today. They had a crew there with Mark Miller when the crash happened.

Seems a trim tab on the rear wing (as Regina said) ripped off and we see it on footage they gave to the National Transportation Safety Board officials. This flap is ajusted by the pilot at high speeds to keep the nose horizontal and explains why the plane shot up when it came off. The pilot must have experienced higher than usual G's going up and blacked out.

The elevator makes the nose to go up and down. The trim tab is what is used to balance the controls after the fuel is burned off and the center of gravity changes. You can make it fly straight and level with your hands off the stick using it. It's a small wheel beside the pilot's left hip that adjusts it. The pictures in my CKA photo album taken beside another P-51 were taken while I used the trim tabs to sync our altitude. If all are properly adjusted you can fly it with your hands off the stick. So the initial cause looks like an elevator failure.
Also many have asked why there was no fireball and felt that it may have been a fuel problem. This P-51 was fitted with foam packed fuel tanks for that reason and it apparently worked.

With an airplane moving that fast, a sudden elevator failure could have easily knocked the pilot unconscious.

I think the sudden stop did more to the pilot than the elevator failure did.

It could explain why the pilot didn't recover. Such a failure is obviously terrible, but not necessarily unrecoverable.
