2 moose stories: First in March, Saskatchewan. Mother and child, they came to the edge of the highway, stopped, looked both ways.
While laughing, I stopped the car, wasn't going to play around.
Another car coming the other way stopped as well, then the two crossed the road.

Second is far better; June '93. 4 bikes, I'm riding second.
New Hampshire, Green Forest, heading to Laconia.
Round the corner, big fucking moose on the road, big enough to ride under him.
Friend in front is off the gas, but has a wicked backfire, so his bike sounds like a machine gun...pap pap pap pap !
Moose is so scared, he's trying to run, be he has 4 legs going 4 different ways !
So funny, almost fell off the bike from laughing.

Coming down an unpaved mountain road, as I'm rounding a curve, I head hoofs hitting the road and the first thought I had was of a horse. Then I see this young bull moose coming straight towards me with a car following behind. I stop the car and the moose realizes I'm there at about 10 feet from my car. He puts the brakes on, slips, slides and finally gets turned around running towards the other car. Same scenario but this time almost falls and he's coming towards me again. Finally, he heads for the woods... it's pretty steep on each side but he goes up... so steep it took him about 10 minutes just to get about 20 feet from the road.

I've hit moose a grand total of three times. Every time it was either late at night or early in the morning.

First time was in a '96 Sunfire. Swerved to evade a huge bull and tapped its front leg with the passenger side door mirror. No damage.

Second time I nailed a calf in a '03 Cavalier. Saw mom walk across the road out of some tall grass, but the calf was short enough I couldn't see it until it ran out onto the road. Swerved to evade but hit the little bugger anyway. OPP had to put it down. Car was repairable.

Third time was in a '09 SV6, crested the top of a hill and a moose was booking 'er across the highway. Swerved to evade but hit the good for nothing cow anyway. Entire driver side of the van was dented up, windshield toast, hood toast, roof toast. Van was a write off. Moose was knocked unconscious by the impact, but woke up, got on its feet, and took off before the OPP could shoot it.

I think moose hunters should get double the tags they are handing out right now. I much prefer moose as jerky than road hazards.

There was that one time I was in Riverdale and I ran over Moose.

Midge was heartbroken.
