$1:
He suggested Ignatieff could win despite polls indicating otherwise: You never can tell what happens in political life. Ill tell you this, in 1984, when the campaign started I was 14 points behind. We ended up in a rather different fashion.
...
And he pointedly dismissed a central tenet of the Conservative campaign, the spectre of an Ignatieff-Layton-Duceppe government: They should not speculate in any way about coalitions or all of this nonsense.

Mulroney not approving of the Conservatives could work to Harper's benefit. Lots of people still passionately hate that crooked chin.

Mulroney is still bitter about being caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Guess he thought Harper should have helped him out.

No kidding.

The most hated PM in history should be worth 2 or 3 points for the Cons.

Mulroney COMPLETELY destroyed the old PC party. Harper was wise to keep the CPC at arms length from the old PC.

Boohooo. Just because he isn't the Conservatives grand old man, he's gonna start whinning.

Well, the bad news is that if it wasn't for Mulroney, Harper wouldn't be PM and the Progressive Conservatives would still be the Party of the Right in Canada but, because of personal greed, arrogance and contempt for all Canadians, we now have the CPC which has excluded the old corrupt PC power brokers.

Maybe Mulroney and Joe Who should write a book about how they both got politically fucked but never kissed. Joe by Pierre and Brian by Steve.

Seems the more the old guard Conservatives whine the less I like them.

I dunno what's sadder, Mulroney's crying or the fact he thinks he's still relevant.

Naw Pierre and his Gas tax did him in politically as PM in the 80 election. He did hang around for years though until like you say Mulroney screwed him over yet again in the 83 PC leadership

I guess that's why he was such a bitter man when the Conservatives amalgamted and fought on to stay as the leader of the PC's.

He touted former Liberal prime minister Lester Pearson, who endured similar political uncertainty to Harper, but had far more to show for his tenure, including medicare and the Maple Leaf flag: “You can do big things — even if you have a minority Parliament. Witness what happened with Mr. Pearson, who achieved great things with minority status.”

$1:
“He should have lowered income taxes instead. Conservatives believe in taxing consumption, not output. How does a GST cut increase productivity?” fumed a veteran Tory.

They have good reason to whine.

Really? So if everyone got back say an extra $1000(or paid $1000 less) at the end of the tax year instead of having that extra $1000 to spend through the year because of lower sales taxes, Canada would be more productive?
I don't pretend to understand economics but that just makes no sense to me.

Most people pay their taxes once or twice a month off their paychecks. Lowering income taxes immediately puts more money in their pocket. According to economists this works out better than charging less for when they spend that money. I'm willing to take their word for it.

ROTFL oh shit, it's been so long I forgot about the payroll deductions as a source of reduction.
