I won't get into the whole handing out bibles to kids debate except to say religion shouldn't be forced down anyone's throat.
Politicians are so irritating and have no balls or backbone. I think one of the requirements when becoming a politician is that you need to have your spine surgically removed so you become a spineless jelly fish.
McGuinty won't give his opinion because he knows that either answer he gives will upset one group or the other, and he would prefer to stay neutral. He say's that the government doesn't have to have an opinion on everything, don't you have an opinion?

What's up here. They are giving the bibles to kids whose parents have signed a slip. Good grief. How can that be a problem, unless of same people handing them out would oppose the handing out of korans (to kids whose parent's have signed it was ok) or Hare Krishna stuff.

I can't beleive I agree with you! 8O Maybe have the school library carry a section of religious books from all the major faiths.

As long as they allow the Muslims and any other group that wants to hand out religious texts the same privilege. Let the JH's hand out the Watchtower. And of course the Wiccans to hand out some of their texts. And if somebody wants to hand our Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchins' books. So send the whole list of possible books to every parent, and they can check off the ones they are interested in.

Nobody should be handing out any religious material at a public school.

Is the school board elected? If they are I completely understand the premier not wanting to get invloved. Total no win situation for him.

It's a big victory for local politics if McGuinty wants to let the trustees figure this out for themselves instead of having another mandate shoved on them by the province. Never thought I'd see the day where this sort of proper Canadian-style* small government enlightenment ever coming from a Liberal politician. Two thumbs up to McG from McMe. R=UP

*Note: definitely not the same psychotic anti-government claptrap right-wing Americans keep prattling on about.

Unless it's a faith based school, the only place religious texts(all major or well known religious groups) should be are in the library as reference material. All missionaries need to stay out of the school unless invited.

$1:
The Waterloo Region public school board is seeking a legal opinion on its policy of allowing Gideons International, an evangelical Christian group, to give Bibles to students in Grade 5 whose parents have signed a permission slip.

What exactly is preventing them from simply giving the parents the bibles directly to give to their kids? Unless of course the whole point is to include the school?

For that matter why don't the parents simply go to church and ask for a bible. They give them out freely.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that any parent who is willing to sign said slip probably already has a bible in the house.

They're trying to get the kids young, mold their impressionable minds.
