I'd say that its
cultural rather than religious, just like Suttee was/is cultural rather than a Hindu thing.
The media reports allude to the fact that this is a common form of killing by husbands who have been cheated on, or women of ‘loose’ morals in parts of Pakistan.
It’s also a favourite technique of murder by the Pakistani Taliban.
