Last month in the chat between the US State Department and China's Foreign Ministry on this topic our Treasury Secretary attended. That's unusual. The chatter is that Geithner told China if there was a conflict with China backing the DPRK we'd cancel our outstanding debt that is held by China.

I think this fits perfectly. He's always played hot and cold. He's just trying to get attention and as many concessions as he can. Now that he stepped close to the edge, he'll pull back and make nice for a while.
