I say legalize it, tax it, regulated it and make a tonne of cash off it. Since pot doesn't have any major health risk (lest none worst than smoking or drinking) and we already have existing laws that can be modified to include pot (drinking and diving laws, smoking laws) if we can make a few billion extra billion dollars a year off legalizing it and legalizing it does not cause a massive rise in addition rates (yes you can get addicted to it) and we make more in taxes than we spend on health care related to it we should make it legal

I realize it's a little bit naive, but I would like to think we could make some of our own laws without being overly concerned with what the American reaction would be.

And of course, we could always insist that the oil and gas we send south gets sent at a rate roughly equal to the speed with which people get through the border crossings. And we could do our own slow-down checking for illegal and controlled guns crossing the border coming north.

That's naive because it assumes that the Canadian government would have more balls than it's ever shown in the past.

Dunno why Bart thinks legalization up here would increase what is already a huge traffic south. And it would look pretty silly militarizing the border when a bunch of US states are also very close to legalization. Guess there'll be troops around those borders too.

Assuming the government kept very tight control over who can grow and sell (like we do now with tobacco)plus how much can be bought and possessed at a time I don't see why the Americans would do anything at the boarder. If we made it so only Canadians and landed immigrants could buy it (need government ID, divers license, BC ID etc)we wouldn't be getting Americans coming up here attempting to buy cause they wouldn't be allowed to buy.

They'd still be up here making friends who could buy for them, or getting fake ids, or just buying from stores that can't be bothered with checking ids. Probably wouldn't be any easier ofr harder to get if its legalized than it is now.

You could show Harper concrete proof that 80% of Canadians wanted pot legalized and he still wouldn't give a tinker's damn.
