yay, why are we so smart but sooo stupid at the same time (I guess it's actually greedy, maybe not stupid). Instead of pouring billions of dollars into renewable energy we are still poisoning this planet, so that a very select few can have all the wealth and power. We have the technology today to become a completely oil free society, we just don't seem ready to take that step, I hope I get to see it in my lifetime.

I don't think we're anywhere close to being oil free - not without crippling if not destrying economies. Look at cars, for example. Yes, there are electric cars, but the cost for all people to buy them is unbearable. Power is supplied by hydro electric, coal, nuclear - remove coal which is the majority and you have to replace it with something. Wind and solar are simply not there yet and would take up huge amounts of land in order to support the grid. Replace all shipping with nuclear or go back to wind? No.

Let's not even bother considering air travel.

It's a pipedream at this point.

Just remember, the computer you used to make that post complaining about oil couldn't have been made without oil.
We are nowhere near being oil free. We CAN reduce our dependency on oil somewhat, but it's gonna be a while before we can get off the oil teat completely.

Fun facts:
Wind power requires vast areas of land and is extremely loud, it is also completely reliant on wind and is prone to catastrophic implosions when the wind gets too strong.

Wave power requires vast sums of water and is extremely dangerous to have floating in the ocean where it can be hit by a boat if it gets caught in a storm

Solar power is so hilariously useless that a town in Spain is powered by a massive facility only made possible by the fact it is in a desert

Hydro power requires reservoirs which results in flooding of massive chunks of land

Nuclear power's waste stays radioactive for decades and requires a large number of safety features just to ensure another Chernobyl does not occur.

I can find major flaws in every single energy source we use, oil is by far the best we have.
